Caramel Cookie Butter Freak Cake ($14.80) 🍪🍰 ⭐️ 2.5/5 ⭐️ 🍴Aesthetically masterful but really not worth the high price for this freak cake. Maybe it was my high expectations but the cake came out very normal. While it had a fluffy vanilla sponge interior, it was nothing beyond a typical sponge cake. A huge let down was that it was extremely sweet. My group hardly tasted any cookie butter flavour beyond the overload of caramel sugariness [email protected], Pomo Mall #02-25, 1 Selegie Rd, S188306 (near Dhoby Ghuat Mrt)

Miso Butter Linguine This was simple but so good! Could taste the miso in it. Fab on its own but mixing the sous vide egg into it just made the sauce that bit richer! Hidden gem in the menu!

Black Velvet Waffles Black velvet waffles with green tea ice cream ($14.90). There's an option to choose soft or crisp waffles. Chose the latter and waffle was indeed crisp on the outside and moist inside. You can also choose either green tea or black sesame ice cream. The green tea taste was more on the milky side but still tasted good overall.

Bara Chirashi Don ($12.80) 🍣 ⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️ 🍴This popular restaurant deserves the hype for its value-for-money sushi bowls. While the sushi isn't of the best quality, it's still real yummy and seasoned well ⚠️ Would recommend going slightly before the opening time ~11.20am to make the first batch of seating as the queue gets really long by 11.40 or going for a late lunch ~1+ [email protected], Thompson Plaza #01-22/30, 301 Upper Thompson Road S574408

Torched To Perfection Such a creative dish yet I still enjoy inari in its simplicity, with the sweet bean curd skin wrapping the seasoned sushi rice. The idea of adding the mentai is sure to satisfy mentaiko lovers though, highly recommended for those who want a mentaiko fix!!!

Lemon Tart ($6 nett) Luscious, zingy lemon custard on a crunchy base is the kind of dessert I'll never tire of. The caramelised surface of this one at @southunionpark added a fragrant, sweet crisp that made their version extra delightful. Only $6 nett for a large slice? Take my money already.

Tarte Flambé ($15) Available on weekends between 9am and 12noon as part of the new breakfast menu is this Tarte Flambé . This Alsatian-Mosellan and South German item (thank you google!) is similar to a pizza, but is more refined and lighter. The base is a thin, flaky crust which has an addictive crisp bite. Spread over it is an appetising sweet and savoury mix of cooked leek onions, roasted mushrooms, bacon and cheese. I think this is ideal for sharing as it comes sliced into 6 easy-to-eat squares. So if you are coming in a group, I suggest ordering a main dish each and getting this to split.

Gravlax Egg Toast ($16 nett) If you've found certain commercial brands of cured salmon too salty or strong tasting, you should try the cured salmon, or "gravlax" as it is called at @southunionpark. Its flavour profile is milder in comparison which I find really palatable. Also, Chef Terence and his team have used it to create one of the prettiest open-faced cold sandwiches I've seen in a while. On a thick slice of brioche is a freaking neat pile of finely-chopped egg dill mayo, and arranged on top of that are the cubes of cured fish with a few slices of housemade pickled cucumbers and red onions for extra punch. By the way, this visually arresting sandwich is only available for breakfast on weekends between 9am and 12noon. So in less than 9 hours from now, you can actually order one if you like 😊.

Friday Lunch Special: Cajun Chicken Bowl ($15 nett) The Cajun Chicken Bowl, available between 11.30am and 2pm on Fridays at South Union Park, has won me over with its delectable protein and carb combo. The team here always takes things up several notches (they make nearly everything from scratch!), so I knew even the rice would be special. And yup, this one here was cooked with garlic butter and small pieces of pineapple, and topped by a salsa of corn and red peppers. I am not exaggerating when I say it tasted as good as it looked. From chatting with Chef-owner Terence, I also learned that the chicken breast in this goes through a two-step cooking process in order to achieve that hard-to-find level of moistness, tenderness and flavour. Portion size was really generous as well, which made me regret wearing such a tight dress today 😂 If you plan on visiting South Union Park, do note the change in their opening hours. Best to check their Facebook page for details.

Unicorn Dreams 🦄 ✨ [Halal, Invited Tasting 4/6] One look at the Unicorn Dreams ($15.90) and you'll think it's a bubble of sweetness that's on the verge of bursting. But surprisingly, it was much more tame in that regard. We have some buttermilk waffles here, with banana brûlée, buttered popcorn, some mini marshmallows, and finally some 'Paddlepop' fondue drizzled in serpentine over it. To complete, we also get a scoop of Summer Berries ice-cream on the same plate. 😛 The elements on the plate all sound like they'd meld into a wonderland of flavours, but they were more straightforward than I'd expected. It's unlike the nightmarishly sweet items from Sugar Lips. As mentioned earlier, this was pleasantly restrained in the amount of sweetness. That presents itself as a double-edged sword - it made it more bearable, thereby more palatable, but it also left more to be desired in terms of intensity. Okay la, given all its merits and shortcomings, I do believe it's something I wouldn't mind finishing. However, I do think the overall gripe I have with this is the same one I have with all Hyde & Co's items – the steep prices and the quality are sadly, a mismatch. (6.5/10)

Kaya French Toast [Halal | Invited Tasting, 3/6] One of their signature dishes, Hyde's Kaya Toast ($15.90) has quite a captivating quality to its neat, minimalist presentation - the shapes distantly remind me of Clean Bandit's logo. With such an aesthetic quality, it can only mean two things - that what you see is what you get or big surprises come in small packages. In the case of this dessert, it was neither as it teeters between the two. It adds a good dose of localised, Malay flavour with the gula melaka shavings, the shy amount of kaya ganache and the scoop of Coconut and Anzac ice-cream. However, the french toast was as how I'd predicted it to be - the eggy-savoury flavour was a little too loaded for my liking. It's not that it was bad, but it was that it was an antipode, which suited the sweet components like fire and water. I took one bite and I was like, "Mmm okay, nope." I will give it to them for the concept though. I do feel like a localised french toast desserts sound, if not look, interesting enough to warrant at least one try. But if you're looking for every buck's worth, the 16-dollar Kaya French Toast may be as sound to you as a phone's silent mode. (6.3/10) 🍞🍳

Pulled Beef Mantou Sliders [Invited Tasting, 2/6] Continuing from yesterday's pizzas, we also got to try their Pulled Beef Mantou Sliders. While I did appreciate the idea of localising the slider here, I felt that the mantou buns were much too oily to work. Also, it was inevitable that every bite would result in juices leaking out of the sliders. Still though, I will give it to them on the fact that the pulled beef was rather tender, and the mantou lent a slight mentega manis (sweet butter) flavour to it, which made it more palatable despite its shortcomings. I think the biggest problem you will have with this is the price. 3 pieces for $9+ is what it's going for. But of course, if you're keen to try it, why should that be of concern, right? 😹 (6.7/10)

I Took Hyde Out, So How Was It? 😯 [Halal | Invited Tasting, 1/6] So the other day, I was kindly invited to an eat-up at Hyde & Co to try out their new items. Their new menu, titled 'Take Hyde Out' is designed to cater to the pro-takeout and pro-delivery crowd. Here is a half-and-half pizza of Geisha (left) and The Bomb (right). Not your conventional toppings for sure, with ingredients such as mentaiko mayo and bonito for the former, and Sambal Cincalok and omelette, chye poh for the latter. But it still manages to not alienate the pizza-nomming experience. My favourite was The Bomb definitely. The thin veil of sambal cincalok packed a spicy punch, and the prawn + chye poh omelette had a nice bite to it which actually felt intrinsic to what a pizza should texturally be like. And oh boy, did I relish this. Funny thing was, I was expecting to hate it knowing how pungent the smell of cincalok usually is, but wow I can safely say that I'm a straight-up convert! It is expensive though, with half a pizza going for $14 and a full-sized one going for $27. But if you ever get the chance to, really, I recommend that you give this localised flavour its deserved try. (Geisha: 6.6/10 | The Bomb: 7.3/10 | Overall: 7/10)

Hot Chocolate Is A Better Choice Picked chili crab omelette with flat white while my friend picked hot chocolate. A bit sad that banana toast is removed on the weekend menu. The omelette is better for 2 to share as it is a bit too much for me to consume the whole omelette. Maybe it would be a better choice if I pick other coffees - flat white is simply not strong enough. However the hot chocolate my friend took was pretty nice - both the appearance and the taste.

Flat Iron Steak Flat Iron Steak ($21) Flat Iron Steak from @vxxcooperative served with salsa verde, roasted eggplant and potatoes and salad. Portion was generous but the steak was a little too well done. Roasted potatoes seasoned with rosemary were addictive though. Nice cafe to chill out at and loving the decor and flooring.

Reverse Affogato After learning about VXX Cooperative from Burpple Blog, I was very curious to visit this place and see what they have to offer, but because I already had dinner before visiting, I thought I can just come by for coffee or desserts. The struggle is real. The Reverse Affogato (S$9.00) appeared to be the most seductive dessert on their menu because of the collaboration with Apiary SG and the use of Nylon Coffee's Seasonal Single Origin Espresso. Other than that, the honeycomb crumble topping just added some texture to the ice cream. And this is a reverse affogato because the ice cream is coffee-flavoured and the liquid is spiced milk. So for every spoonful of ice cream I scoop into my mouth, there is this mild but pleasant spice taste. Just chillax and immerse in the ambience.

Banana French Toast ($12 nett) A pretty dish destined for Instagram, but sadly fell short of expectations. Instead of a comforting eggy French toast, this tasted more like normal toast sandwiched with jam and a couple of bananas, and it was on the drier side. The saving grace was the mascarpone and freeze-dried raspberries; we ended up eating only the top layer with the accompanying coffee custard. This dish definitely has potential for improvement.

; Crispy Taro Balls Mashed Taro and Orange Sweet Potato encased in a thin crisp yet slightly chewy fried shell. Smear on some condensed milk if you like your desserts extra sweet. Even @jonathanleewe who doesn't like Orh-Nee, approves of this. You may think "taro after hotpot's too heavy for dessert", but trust me, no matter how full you are from your meal here, you wouldn't wanna miss these balls 🤓 9.8bucks/serve of 6pcs #FTrecommends

; Pot Choices One of my absolute favourite hotpots in town, Long Qing, now offers Sake parings! We had a taste of the citrusy Miwa Yuzu Sake (personal fave), the traditional Kiku Masamune Junmai Taru and the sofisticated Ozeiki Junmai Rai for more experienced alcoholics. 😉 If you need recommendations for broth choices, try these: - Spicy MaLa Broth | good amount of heat without too much of the numbing sensation. - Wild Mushroom Broth | the friggin' best extracted mushroom flavoured broth I've ever tasted. More than three types of mushrooms boiled for hours with their signature Pork broth! - Shark's Fin Melon Herbal Soup | newest addition to their broth choices, naturally sweetened with Honey Dates and Chinese Almonds. 58bucks/bottle of Yuzu Sake #FTrecommends

Crispy Taro Balls (6 for $9.80++) These can be elusive as they are hand-made in small batches by the Head Chef. Do make sure to reserve them when you make a table booking. Otherwise you may miss out on ending your steamboat meal with these delightful domes of smooth yam paste coated in a thin, lightly crispy dough.

Angus Meat Ragu Pasta ($16) 🍝 ⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️ 🍴Simple yummy pasta with generous servings of pulled beef and pork. It was flavourful and I really liked the crispy flakes that came with it. Ah Bong's Italian. Poor man's truffle. I could smell the truffle as the server was bringing this to me. This is how strong the smell was. They have a generous portion of Conchiglie pasta, mushroom pesto and cheese on top. I ordered the $12 lunch set that comes with a drink and a measly brownie. yummy yummy yummy. Lunch is settled with Ah Bong’s Italian affordable weekday lunch sets. A penne saved is a penne earned but they sure didn’t scrimp on flavour for their Poor Man’s Truffle Pasta. Served with a generous serving of mushrooms pesto chicken and enhanced with chilli and wine, it had a great earthy aroma (though still nothing like truffle). My lunch companion’s Haebi Aglio Olio was simple and good too with the surprising choice of dou miao in the mix of dried shrimps and wine. And as expected the pastas were well-executed with a firm al-dente texture. To add to the value, you can’t skip dessert and I really love their brownie with that sprinkle of sea salt to boost the sweet-salty-chocolatey combination.

Tea puffs for tea time. Exploring this app proper for the first time and decided to make use of the 1 for 1 promo for these lovely tea puffs! They were smaller than the pictures make it out to be tho.. wouldn't have bought them at the full price ($3.20) :x From left to right: eternal rose, matcha, milk tea (it was underwhelming so I recommend skipping it) and earl grey. Enjoyed the hints of matcha and earl grey in the puffs in particular.

Simply could not resist these beauties, especially when there's a 1-for-1 deal (U.P. $3.20 each) with the #burpple app! These tea puffs were created in collaboration with @dulcetnstudio featuring flavours exclusive to @1872clippertea. It's hard to pick a favourite when they were all so yummy! . Floral lovers would gravitate straight towards the perfume-y Eternal Garden that had a delicious rose aroma. . For more robust tea flavours, I'd highly recommend the Milk Tea, or Matcha. . And for those who prefer something more subtle might go for the lighter Earl Grey. . Thanks @burpple for jio-ing! #burpplegotjio #choux #chouxpuff #dessert
