Rosti in a Hawker Centre Ang Moh Zi Char is the only hawker stall in Singapore I know of which serves rosti. Being a big fan of their sister stall Butternut Kitchen and their thin crust fusion pizza, I was kinda looking forward to trying their rosti. For $13, you get a nice sized rosti topped with a salmon fillet and some garden peas. The key to a good rosti is a crispy crust and unfortunately, Ang Moh Zi Char's rosti was soggy and greasy. I will be back for their pizza but will probably give the rosti a miss.

Rosti Order the Rosti with 2 protein (chicken chop NC Salmon which cost $12. The Rosti was served quickly in about 2mins to me that's when I knew it was not cooked to order. The Rosti is soggy and not crispy as I expect. The salmon seems a bit undercook. The only good thing would be the chicken chop which was marinated well. I felt that overall, concept of this stall is good but food is not as good as Butternut.

Roast Meats Saw a crowd during lunch before, so we had to come back to try, of course! Our default roast meat stall near the office is 88 Hong Kong, so the char siew and sio bak here had big shoes to fill; they were not bad, but nowhere near our accustomed standard. The chicken was so-so but the tender and tasty duck fared much better. Noodles aren't the super q Hong Kong-style either, which I personally prefer. I'd say it's a good enough lunch option in the area, but I wouldn't go out of our way to come here again. Price: from $3 for Char Siew/Sio Bak Rice and Wanton/Dumpling Noodle/ Soup

Late Night Dinner Late Saturday night date w mommy, which reminded me of the times where she would take leave from work to accompany during exams in pri school. She insisted on shopping before dinner. Good thing I ate a froyo while she was shopping. They are so efficient here that the food is served almost immediately after ordering. We got a claypot ee mee and a wolfberry egg drop soup. The claypot was filled with lots of liao! Love the bite of the wolfberry vege. They usu put this vege in ban mian in the past, but no one does it anymore.. 😢 #hawkerpedia

Roast Pork + Roast Duck Rice Had been wanting to try this stall ever since my mum started raving on how good the roast here is. Roast Pork was actually pretty good; savoury with smoky flavours and a really crispy skin. Roast Duck was equally good as it is flavourful, with crisp skin with its juiciness kept. Worth eating if in the area.

Stir fried beef with garlic chives Whilst the focus is (rightfully) on Hong Kong Star's fish dishes, you should definitely not miss out on their stir fried beef with garlic chives. I was craving for beef one night and decided to try out this unassuming dish. The beef was juicy and tender and stir fried in a sweet savoury garlicky sauce. Paired with the equally pungent garlic chives, this dish is an excellent rice thief that will leave you craving for more. Needless to say, I have been back for more several times since!

Stir fried vegetables with tofu Miss K always scolds me for not eating my veggies because I always find it expensive to pay for a plate of veggies when I could have a more satisfying plate of meats! HK Star's portions are as usual generous so I will close one eye in this case! Their tofu reminds me more of tau kwa in terms of texture and the dish feels 'healthy' because it is lightly seasoned to allow you to taste each individual ingredient.

Steamed grouper fish We were back (and tbh on multiple occasions since) at Hong Kong Star Zi Char to check out some of their other dishes. For $20 to $30 (depending on its size), you yet a good sized fresh grouper fish. The fish is delicately steamed to perfection upon order - moist, flaky and tender. You can tell the fish is fresh because the meat is buttery sweet and there is no muddy or 'fishy' aftertaste. I like it that HK Star uses a lighter and subtly sweet soy sauce base to accompany their steam fish. It is great over rice and alright even if you 'drink' it up by the spoonful. I find that most eateries tend to use heavier tasting soy sauces either to cover the 'fishy' odours of the fish or to make it more 'flavourful'. To be honest, I think HK Star's lighter touch is better as it allows the natural flavours of the fish to shine through instead of overpowering it. Hk Star also serves other fishes but they are often snapped up fast. So remember, the early bird catches the fish!

Curry Fish Head Jin Pai Zi Char is one of the few stalls here at Alexandra Village that opens after 8pm. Google reviews for this place is rather good. The Fish Head curry here is rather good. Curry was thick and flavourful. Fish head was fresh and this place totally justified its high Google rating.

Salted Egg Pork Rib Rice My fortune. I came early and there was no queue. After my adventures here, I thought to order what should be a crowd favourite. The sauce was starchy and complex again, but although the meat was fried well, it's a little dry and bland. I was slightly disappointed, but that's owing to the high standards here. I previously thought the cook might be Viet as the stallholder is, but he isn't and likely local.

Sambal Beef Rice Good food comes in categories. One is how it's so good you forgive the suffering it causes you. Despite the usual lack of queue here, the wait is insane. It almost erased my goodwill from my first visit. Then this arrived. I thought my creamy chicken was a one-off, but even something common like sambal beef was unique here. The sauce was rich, unlike some diluted ones, yet complex, unlike some either spicy or salty. The meat was large, tender slices. Strong wok hei again. Not only did the goodness excuse the wait, the uniqueness distracted me from it. The female stallholder is Viet, I can't tell is the male cook local, but this is not your usual zichar. The one-dish meals arrive so confident. Just one large serving of your choice and plain rice. Nothing fancy. This zichar cannot compete with the full-menu brands, but I'm tempted to say it's the best zichar with one-dish meals.

Seng Kee Handmade Fishball Noodles ($4.50 On Deliveroo) Was very pleasantly surprised by this bowl of noodles! The her kiao (fish dumpling) was qq with good flavour, and the fishballs & fishcakes soft and bouncy. Didn’t really like the minced meat fishball, it had a slight fishy smell. The meekia was slightly thinner then usual, and was chewy. Loved the sambal, which was on the sweeter side, but still savoury and very fiery. This was still piping hot though it was delivered, and they were very generous with the noodles. A good find from deliveroo, I would be interested in heading down to the store when the coronavirus situation has improved :)

Salted Egg Chicken 3/5 - $12 Not bad in terms of taste. I find it difficult to find really nice salted egg in singapore, but this is not bad. As compared to the one at Far East, 3/5. In general 4/5

Fragrant Pork Rice 甘香猪肉饭 Another staple from the Zi Char place that I usually order. You get a fair decent amount of pork slices that's fragrant with onions and coated with a savoury sauce, rice and an egg. A hearty meal; just beware that some of the vegetables that they cook the sauce with can be a bit fibrous and hard to chew. Rating 7/10.

Prawn Paste chicken Pretty decent prawn paste chicken. The skin was crispy and the prawn paste flavour profile was strong enough. A staple for takeaway dinners. The waiting period varies from 10 mins to 20 mins depending on the number of customers that day. Rating 6.9/10

Seafood Hor Fun (Approx $5.50) Got this for lunch during one of the weekdays. It was pretty satisfying overall with distinct enough wokhei (the beansprouts were slightly charred), and topped with a combination of squid, fish slices and shrimps. A robust, quick and satisfying lunch before it's back to work. Will order again !😄

Salted Egg Curry Chicken Rice ($6.90) Can’t decide between salted egg or curry? Why not have both! This mini wok stall at Westgate’s Food Republic is not your usual zi char stall. On their extensive menu, there are interesting dishes like this salted egg curry chicken rice and chicken cutlet hor fun. The deep-fried chicken chunks had texture like those of a sweet and sour pork dish, especially the crispy batter. Portion was quite worthwhile for the price. I am not too sure if I like the salted egg and curry combination because the ratio was imbalanced, with the earthiness and slickness of the curry overpowering the salted egg sauce. In fact, there wasn’t much salted egg sauce, just a slight hint. No chili padi, no curry leaves which I define as the 2 most essential ingredients in a salted egg dish. But the good thing was that it wasn’t jelak. Every rice dish also comes with a fried egg and a bowl of vegetable soup. The chili was surprisingly good; the taste of hae bi hiam was evident in the sambal. Good to dip the chicken chunks in!

Salted Egg Chicken Rice Real salted egg bits! Fair amount of salted egg chicken. Normal Zi Char price at $6. Overall very good!
