Ok I brought an overseas guest to taste this as it’s not something they have in HK.
But I feel it was missing a crunch element. Could be better, I might make this myself at home though.
Stay tuned to my Instagram: YianTheFoodie for my rendition of Tau Kwa Pau

Besides Say Seng in Dunman FC, I only know of one other stall in Tiong Bahru FC that serves tau kwa pau, a quaint dish not found elsewhere where a piece of deep fried beancurd is horizontally sliced in the middle, stuffed with fried fish cake, cucumber, braised egg and fried yam stripes, garnished with coriander and finished a drizzle of Teochew duck braising sauce.

This dish was apparently created by Say Seng and served alongside teochew duck rice for pantang Peranakan gamblers as the food-equivalent of the lucky red underwear as it resembled a gold ingot overflowing with valuables.

The key to this dish is mix of textures - the soft beancurd, the crunchy cucumber, chewy fishcake and the crispy fried yam strips all in one bite. Much of its flavour is owed to the savoury and herbaceous Teochew duck braising sauce and the tangy duck rice chilli served alongside it.

I may be mistaken but I thought Say Seng used to serve this dish with bits of shredded duck meat... Oh well, it may just be the Family's unique way of zhnging this dish!

Tau kwa bao (S$2/ pc)

How many of you have tried this disappearing snack/side dish? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Before you start racking your brains to figure out what this plate of mess is, why not try it out the next time you are at Duncan Food Centre? Tau Kwa, or commonly known as fried bean curd, sliced and stuffed with a myriad of ingredients which include braised egg, cucumber, deep fried yam, fried fish cake. Interestingly, most of the ingredients were overflowing out of the fried bean curd. To complete the dish, you need to have their gooey braised duck gravy (since they sell braised duck rice too) slathered over. The boyf who introduced me to this ordered a plate of the deep fried yam alone, which had an ultra crispy batter over the yam filling. Dip in the tangy chili sauce for an extra kick!

I can’t say for sure I really like/dislike this, it made me quite confused as to what I am actually eating. But I know it’s definitely one that’s worth preserving in our hawker culture.

Taukwa stuffed with fish cake, egg, meat and crispy bits (and other ingredients which I’m unsure of). The taukwa was soft and fresh, and slathered with a nice savoury sauce (braised duck gravy). The components went well together!

First time visiting this stall, and although they are famous for their Tau Kwa Pau we opted for their braised duck rice instead.

The braised duck is not the most tender but its still really nice with a good firm bite. The lor bak though, is very tender with a melt in the mouth texture, highly recommend to add on! The savoury chilli that comes together with it is apparently what they use for the Tau Kwa Pau, and it went really well with duck rice too! Overall, a very good plate of braised duck rice plus add ons!

There is another famous duck rice stall in the same level, i’ll check out that stall next time and compare which is better.
