Old Hen is a quaint cafe hidden in a row of shops that is a short distance away from Farrer Park MRT, and they specialise in their coffee as well as baked pastries. However, as we were visiting in the evening, we decided to get something lighter and we ordered a matcha latte instead. We could taste a slight bitterness in the matcha-based drink, although this was largely overpowered by the milk in the drink. Would have loved it if the matcha flavour was more pronounced. The drink was priced at $6, which was a pretty standard price for a hot drink at a cafe.

We love the insides of Old Hen though, and we thought that the use of the fan covers and fan blades to decorate the lighting in the interior was really special. The interior decorations gave off a pretty chill old-school vibe and it would be nice to have a conversation over coffee here. That being said, there is a time limit of 1 hour for dining in though.

Absolutely loved this. The teacake was soft and sufficiently moist, and there was a generous amount of walnuts for a good crunch. There was a good spice profile in this, that of cinnamon and nutmeg. There was a warm, earthy taste to the cake itself, which was further perfected by the slightly saltish cream cheese. This helped to balance the slight brown sugar sweetness which overall made this a wonderful delight to eat.

Chocolate hazelnut ganache on the teacake was so decadent. The teacake itself was layered with a biscuit, which gave a super good crunch together on top of the hazelnuts. As someone who does not have a penchant for sweet things, this did not feel too sweet, until after a while. Nonetheless, for anyone who is buying this, you’re expected to be greeted with a rich, chocolatey experience.

Creamy and smooth matcha milk that was slightly on the milkier side. Matcha taste was apparent but somehow I felt like this was on the pricier side.

One of my favourite white cold brews is from Old Hen. Light, a good balance of milk, and not too sweet. Very smooth consistency as well.

Think chocolate milk but slightly thicker and of better quality. Rich, decadent bottle of iced chocolate. Surprised that it isn’t too sweet either!

You can taste how rich the mocha is in this bottle. The Valrhona dark cocoa gave a slightly thicker consistency to this drink but and coffee did well in balancing out the sweetness. You can definitely still get your caffeine kick from this.

Christmas is just round the corner, and Old Hen Coffee has just released yet another batch of beverages for the festive season. Joining the Peppermint Cocoa which had made its appearance during the same period in prior years is the Gingerbread Coffee — a newly introduced limited-time only special for this season.

Described to be brewed with “quintessential holiday spices like ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon”, the Gingerbread Coffee does carry a spiced note that is pretty similar to that of the Spiced Pumpkin Latte that they have released as a special for the Halloween season, though the Gingerbread Coffee is significantly less sweet — pretty much to an unsweetened version of their iconic creamy cold brew with evident hints of cinnamon and ginger. Personally still prefer the Peppermint Cocoa over this one given how festive it tastes, though the Peppermint Cocoa does lack the caffeine component that the Gingerbread Coffee has.

With Old Hen Coffee releasing a new bottled brew for every season of the late, I am looking forward to see if they will be coming up with any new creation for the Chinese New Year season that is coming next after Christmas, considering they do release the Orange Mocha annually in line with the festivities. Let’s just cross our fingers for now and hope for some new and innovative flavours for their bottled brews to come …

Old Hen Coffee/Kitchen’s bottled brews have always been a favourite amongst many ever since they had first opened their doors — probably one of the pioneers for white cold brew coffee while the local cafe culture was still emerging. Since then, they have experimented with few limited edition runs — fans of their bottled brews may recall flavours like their Peppermint Chocolate (during Christmas season) and Orange Mocha (during Chinese New Year); the Spice Pumpkin Latte is one of the newest additions to the seasonal specials here — perhaps Old Hen Coffee/Kitchen’s take on Starbuck’s PSL (i.e. Pumpkin Spice Latte) in the all-familiar bottled brew format.

Will leave the labels on the bottle to do all the talking (scroll left for the description), but do expect that this is a bottled latte rather than a bottled cold brew — not quite as rich and creamy as their Cold Brew (White), but think of it as an unsweetened cold brew base, with a lightly sweet finish from the pumpkin and a hint of spice from the nutmeg without being too overwhelming; a balance between all components with a clear note of caffeine that makes it unmistakably a latte.

It’s been quite a while since Old Hen Coffee had released a new flavour for their bottled brews save for the Cold Brew (Oat) when they had changed the branding and bottles of the cold brews — glad that they are actually still looking into creating new concoctions for the seasonal specials. Perhaps something to make that trip to Old Hen Coffee/Kitchen for if one is a fan of their bottled brews and wouldn’t miss out on the new flavours that they have to offer.

They've been in the cold brew scene for awhile now & even with their repackaged look, @oldhencoffee still remains consistent in serving up delish cold brews.

Ranging from your usual white/black cold brew, they also have mocha, chocolate, matcha and oat white.

For their white, flavour profile wise is creamy, nutty and smooth to drink, exactly as the description states. An easy option for both coffee lovers & non-coffee lovers alike. For their black, it's light & fruity, making it really easy to drink.

Need fuel for a tough week ahead? Old Hen cold brews are light, creamy (those with milk) and you can smell the coffee aroma. Coffee wise it is relatively strong while not being too acidic.

Its been a long long time ever since I made my last visit to Old Hen Coffee — the last time being even before this thing called “COVID-19” actually existed; definitely miss those times where one could head out without actually wearing a mask, and it feels like this “new norm” has already been this way for a while.

Having seen Old Hen Coffee Bar’s updated menu via their social media pages, I was really attracted to the Brownie Affogato — a relatively new item being introduced to the menu (at least to me) that is exclusively available at Old Hen Coffee Bar (i.e. their original space at 88 Rangoon Road). Those whom have been following my Instagram feed for a while may have come across the “Bittersweet” from Percolate, and the same conceptual ideas have brought upon the Brownie Affogato here at Old Hen Coffee Bar — brownie, served with a scoop of Vanilla ice-cream over the top, and with a shot of espresso served on the side to be poured atop the scoop of Vanilla ice-cream for maximum enjoyment.

There is something about how simple this dessert may be in terms of its set up, but takes into consideration more details than one might think. The brownie here comes all fudgy; served warm, its rich, dense and chocolatey — glad how this does not burn the throat and is nowhere near being heaty. The Vanilla ice-cream is where the details lie; considering it has to be served atop a warm slab of brownie, and also doused with warm espresso atop, the ice-cream has to be served chilled, and should not melt too easily to end up in a mosh due to the warm elements around it — the Vanilla ice-cream here stays true to those concerns, and holds much of its integrity down to the last morsel whilst slowly infusing itself into the espresso as it gently melts to the heat of the surrounding elements and climate. With that, the flavours of all the elements in the Brownie Affogato melds into one; the bittersweetness of the brownie along with a slight hint of saltishness from the sea salt, the aromatic vanilla beans of the smooth and creamy Vanilla ice-cream, and the roasty, earthy notes of the espresso shot comes together as one — almost akin to having a brownie with ice-cream and a cuppa on the side.

Being the first specialty cafe to have launched bottled cold brews, Old Hen Coffee Bar has since become an established name in the local coffee scene. Whilst they have expanded their operations into Old Hen Kitchen several years ago, Old Hen Coffee Bar has always been seen as a more down-to-earth establishment with its more earnest food offerings that does away with the fussy fusion elements in cafe offerings of the modern day coffeehouse. No doubt the food offered may not be quite as adventurous or even interesting as some may say, but Old Hen Coffee Bar is a spot I would return to when looking for a safe option that I know I would leave satisfied.

Dark dark chocolate peppermint drink to ring in the holidays! Love the thick chocolatey taste that’s more bitter than sweet (makes you feel healthier!). Peppermint taste was pretty prominent and doesn’t taste artificial. Grab a bottle before it gets sold out!

I’m a little bit (very) late to the hype but I’ve finally got to try these cold brews that everyone talked about. And they didn’t disappoint!

Both drinks were creamy goodness - the cold brew white definitely stole the show with the right balance of milk and coffee and the right level of sweetness. The matcha milk tasted ordinary, but still good.

The bottles looked a little tiny but it’s actually 330ml which is an alright amount for an afternoon drink. We managed to get the window seats so we could sip our drinks while people watching. :)

Cold Matcha Milk (Old Hen Coffee) taste much better and it's not sweet and bitter taste. It's quite milky and need several days to drink the bottle finish. Need to shake first before consuming drinks.

Circuit breaker really got my body clock warped— hence the increased consumption of 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙨 (~$7) . This was a short tasting coffee, with the transition from different flavours taking place rather quickly.

The coffee flavour fell into a silky milky one fast, and it left a rather creamy coating in my mouth. Whilst I felt it was a tad too milky for my liking, I appreciated the smooth body of this brew.😌

Ig @goodfomood

Both drinks were very fragrant and not too sweet. I really enjoyed both and will definitely revisit!!
