Hong Kong Trip!
Their roasted goose indeed deserved its gleaming reputation- crispy skin and tender meat albeit greasy. Their char siew was delicious too although I still prefer Joy Hing's rendition. Ate here twice but couldn't get the goose drumstick on both occasions. Still yummy nonetheless.
Freshly baked daily, I managed to snatch this piece when the shop just opened. They only had winter melon fillings for their traditional wife biscuits, but that's all I wanted anyway. Personally, I don't like flaky pastry layers like those commonly found in tau sar piah, though I still ate Wing Wah's wife biscuit because I thought the filling made up for it.
But this one puts the rest to shame. The flaky crust was a bit doughy and not oily, which made it less jelat. Then as I sank my teeth, half expecting tough biscuit texture, I was pleasantly surprised at how chewy it was. The winter melon paste was not sweet and had no artificial taste (which I found at another popular wife biscuit shop). Too bad they are best when eaten warm, just out of the oven, so I didn't buy some home. Will return for this!
Fortunately, in HK, the price is much friendlier. Located in an unpretentious food market, the shop was not yet packed when I arrived slightly after 8am. Ordered their congee with pig's innards + fish belly + you tiao and was still impressed with the smooth texture and strong wok hei flavour. The innards were clean, and they're generous in portion too!
Noodle was a tad soft, as expected from most dan dan mien shops but the peanut sauce & grated peanut made up for it. Could have been spicier but still a pretty good bowl of dan dan mien nonetheless.
Noodle was thin and springy with a very subtle alkaline taste. Of course, the highlight was the wantons that came with crunchy prawn and juicy minced pork, wrapped in thin wanton skin. The large portion (6 wantons) wasn't that big either- just nice for one person, so don't waste your time ordering the small portion.
Ordered their original double skin steamed milk pudding and was really impressed with the smooth texture of the pudding. Simple and not too sweet- I was instantly hooked with this. I tried some other "milk company(s)" and tau huay stall but nothing can match up to the pudding from Yee Shun.
Chewy and soft in texture but the edges remained crispy! Although generously doused in condensed milk, the bread didnt turn soggy quickly. Suggest sharing this because it's surprisingly quite filling.
Joy Hing's Three Treasure Rice was such a steal. At HKD42, it came with steamed chicken in soy sauce, roasted duck and char siew. My favourite of the three types of meat was the char siew- thick but sufficiently tender with distinct charred caramel flavour. And topping the meat off was the addictive condiment of garlic and spring onion in sesame oil. The rice portion in HK is generally bigger, making it hard for me to finish, but for these beautiful cuts, it was wiped clean within minutes!
