South Asia
This family restaurant has been in business since 1950, and at this Dempsey location since the 80’s. It is a bit of a cult, with loyal customers, many of whom first came here as kids. The clientèle is largely Asian, and mainly local at that. The fish head curry is awesome, although at the last visit, I found it a bit too salty. Other dishes are not the best Indian you can get in Singapore, but you come here mainly for the experience, and the fish head! Efficient service from roaming wait staff, who can happily refill your needs in rice, pappadum, or vegs. Prices are very reasonable.

Kool dékor. The menu is short, but the food is flavourful and very refined, like at the Rang mothership restaurant. The Kulzza is not that amazing, but the dipping chilli sauce is phenomenal. Same can be said about the naan - maybe it’s a general problem with the oven? Pro-active and professional service, even if the staff are not very talkative.

One of better Indian restaurants in Orchard Road area. The décor is more rustic, and the food is not as refined as at the ‘celebrity’ Indians (like Rang Mahal, Song of India, Punjab Grill, Yantra) but it is much more satisfying - like a good old traditional French dish at a top bistrot vs. a beautifully-plated and highly-technical one with emulsion at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The vindaloo is one of the best you can have! I like extremely spicy food, but did well to follow the advice of owner Sandeep Sachar and ordered it with 6 chillis (on a scale of 1 to 10), otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to savour the different subtle flavours in the curry. Fragrant biryani and excellent garlic naan. Warm and attentive service staff, who share Mr. Sachar’s passion.
Rooftop restaurant of Mustafa Centre, and in the same character/style as the store: plebeian décor and ambience; open from 11 am to 1 am; all varieties of South Asian food - North Indian, South Indian, Pakistani, even Indo-Chinese (ie. Chinese dishes cooked with Indian spices, extremely difficult to find even in India and certainly outside); moderate prices; Halal-certified. You’ll be spoiled by the different varieties of dosa and biryanis. Not terribly refreshing, but surprise, surprise - one of the most flavourful Indian food in Singapore! Even if you don’t plan to shop at Mustafa, worth a trip!
