Unless you live nearby, it takes dedication to come this far to Segambut. But the trek is worth it for a hearty, group-friendly meal at the streetside Zheng Kee. The zinc-roofed stall is led by its meats, with the Steamed Chicken (from RM16) in the spotlight for its soft, yellow skin and supple flesh, especially if you opt for the capon bird (from RM22) — castrated chickens known for juicier meat. The crowd favourite, however, falls to the Siew Yuk (from RM16) that earns the Burpple community's stamp of approval with its cookie-crisp skin. The fatty layer beneath alternates with tender flesh to gives it points over the less impressive Char Siew (from RM16) here. Beat the heat with a herbal soup, their signature Coconut Chicken Soup (RM18) is served in a coconut husk chock full of healing, herbal goodness.

Hidden along a quiet street off the main road, this conventional-looking coffeeshop surprises with a somewhat novel menu. For lunch, fill your tummy on hearty plates like the Pork Chop Rice (RM7.50). The tender pork chop slices are slicked in a dark, sweet-sticky sauce, which plays nice with white rice for punchy yet balanced flavours. Do like Burppler Muriel A and top up RM1 for the perfectly oozy fried egg! Noodle recommendations run wide here, with the Foo Chow-style Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua (RM7.50) at the top of our list. But it is worth noting that the heartwarming dish sells out early, especially on rainy days. If that's the case, try their interesting take on wok hei-fragrant Fried Chee Cheong Fun (RM6.50) that resembles char kuey teow with chee cheong fun rolls, or join the rest of Chin Heng's customers in ordering the comfort food choice: Chicken Chop (RM9.50).

Fans of fried chicken, make a beeline for this nondescript Segambut stall. Affectionately known to regulars as the 'drug chicken' (it's super addictive!), the Fried Chicken (from RM4.80) here is the stuff made of crunchy batter and moist, tender meat. From the plethora of parts to choose from, go with Burppler Amayzing's usual order of Double Whole Chicken Leg (RM17.60) that's best for value and super yum! Apart from being our favourite part of the chick, the upsized portion also guarantees there is enough chicken to go around for seconds. Don't let the lacklustre looks of plain white rice disappoint you, it packs enjoyment when had with their fiery chilli sauce. It will cost you an additional RM0.50 for extra sauce but trust us — the flavour boost is well worth the dime.

One of the older stalwarts in the neighbourhood is Lau Heong, which has built a stellar reputation for tai chow over the years. The two-storey shoplot splits diners between air-conditioned and outdoor seatings, both comfortable enough to accommodate big groups — jot this down for family or team dinners! You cannot go wrong with Fish Head Curry (from RM28) that comes with fleshy fish head chunks, vegetables and lots of gravy to ladle over rice. We love that it's big on flavour yet leaves our palates shy of jelat-ness. Burppler Anna Wong calls their Nam Yu Fried Chicken Wings (RM2.20 each) the bomb, likely due to its aromatic marinade that melds fermented bean curd with prawn paste. A dish unique to Lau Heong's menu is the Seafood Hotplate (RM20), which sees squid rings and prawns cooked in creamy, spice-laden gravy on a banana leaf.

As is the trend at many places in Sentul, the snaking queues start at this nasi lemak stall at opening hours — a small window for dinner between 6-8pm. Spot Uncle Loo's setup outside an aquarium pet shop, where he dishes out his Chinese-style nasi lemak spread that's to die for. The Nasi Lemak on its own, is an absolute steal at only RM2, so go ahead and splurge on the variety of mouthwatering sides. You must get the stall's claim to fame, Pork Curry (RM2.80), which features fall-off-the-bone ribs slathered in a brightly spicy sauce. The combination always works with a slice of Luncheon Meat (RM1) or two, to soak up all that delicious curry sauce. If you need more options to mix things up — and why not when it's at such pocket-friendly prices — look to the likes of their piquant Sambal Petai (RM1), Stir-Fried Kangkung (RM0.80) and zesty Ayam Rendang (RM2.80).

The age may show in its ramshackled signage, but Hoi Kee's hawker stalls still reign supreme on our Segambut list. For starters, try the Hennessy XO Seafood Noodles (from RM12). The milky broth is spiked with brandy to give it an extra lush mouthfeel, adding flavour to the bowl topped with plenty of prawns and clams. On the other hand, Tastemaker Sok Chien Lim finds that the dish of Dry Pork Noodles (RM6.50) here has the ability to instantly uplift her day with the comfort-giving minced meat sauce and generous toppings. We also hear of an excellent Jawa Mee (from RM5.50) that comes close to Penang's standards in the same coffeeshop, so if you're a fan of the dish, look it up!

Now franchised across several outlets in Klang Valley, Sentul Ah Yap's Hokkien Mee is still best savoured at this original joint. The modern-ish space allows you to choose between sitting by the charcoal wok for the full experience, or escaping into the more comfortable confines of the air-conditioned restaurant. Order, of course, the Hokkien Mee (from RM8.90). While it lacks the lardy luxury of other popular renditions of the dish, it still garners much love for intense wok hei — achievable only by cooking the noodles over charcoal fire. Consider also the Fried Pak Ko (from RM9.90), featuring sliced rice cakes wok-fried in the same flavoursome sauce as the former. Apart from noodles, the restaurant also dishes out tai chow-style dishes for dinner, with options such as a delightful, not-so-bitter Salted Egg Bitter Gourd (from RM15.90) that will please diners of all ages.
