Live To Eat (or Die Trying) - The Land Of Sushi Edition
A trending hotspot among the Burpple community, OMU is a must-visit for all omu rice lovers. Prices begin at an affordable $9.80 for a basic Omurice, with five sauce types to choose from, and the option for toppings like Pork Shabu Shabu, Cream Croquettes and Deep-fried Shrimps. If it's your first visit, you must request for eggs to be made lava-style (additional $2), regardless of what Omurice you choose (except for Doria-style). In this option, the eggs are cooked till set on the surface, but half-cooked and creamy within. Burppler Rueann Dass shares that the eggs here are generally underseasoned, and to choose your sauce wisely for flavour. She highly recommends the Hayashi, a hearty, beefy Japanese-Western brown sauce. We also enjoyed the more balanced Tomato and umami Demi Glace. If you plan on Instagramming this, take Burppler Siming T's advice to ask that toppings be served on a separate side plate, so the lava-style egg can flow beautifully over the rice and sauce.
Pro tip: This place is still buzzing, so visit during off-peak meal hours or be prepared to queue!
Avg price: $15

From Tsukiji Fish Market Restaurant at Orchard Central; it replaces Sumiya at the Sky Garden right opposite Joie by Dozo. It is apparently a Japanese restaurant concept that is a collective of several brands under one roof, namely Tsukiji Fish Market Restaurant itself, Ueki Omakase Restaurant, Takuman, Tori Sho Chicken, Ebi Zo Ebi Tempura Restaurant and Ikezaki Japanese BBQ (coming soon). Do note that not all of the restaurants are open during lunch hour, though we noticed Takuman, Tsukiji Fish Market Restaurant and Ebi Zo Ebi Tempura Restaurant being opened during our visit for lunch.
The Ebizo Signature Tempura Rice Bowl came pretty huge and looking quite promising — came with Tempura squid, long beans, sweet ebi, sea eel, mushroom and even a choice between Tempura Egg or Onsen Egg (which I chose the former). The set also came with Miso Soup, salad and pickles. Pretty impressed with the fried items here that is served atop the saucy rice (though some might think it's a bit excessive considered the puddle of sauce beneath the rice); all of the fried items came Crispy without ever being soggy, surprisingly not too greasy and quite fresh especially for the mushroom which was really earthy and flavourful and the sea eel that was huge, tender (not really bony) and a little savoury with unagi sauce brushed atop beneath the batter. The tempura egg was also extremely satisfying; flowy yolk that oozes as one pokes through the egg and the crisp Tempura batter outside. A pretty good bowl that's affordable and without the queue that one should try, before the queue starts to form.
The salmon and beef were cooked sous vide, what I was pleasantly surprised with was that the salmon was very well executed when most people would just overcook salmon in general. The only down side was that even though we went at about 7.30pm, it was still an hour's wait and the rice bowls were supposed to come with salad/veg but they ran out of it.
The bowl of rice was surprisingly small. Beef was ok, pepper sauce underneath was good. what was interesting was the ginger foam which gave this don an interesting flavour
With pan seared foie gras, US Black Angus short rib, onsen egg, truffle soy and black garlic brown butter over the signature rice. Still the best value foie gras and beef don. Yummy too!

#burpple 23 sgd for this which is pretty cheap!
Really a splurge (in comparison with the other options in NUS UTown), but really worth it considering the amount of beef they give. And it's suuuper good and tender and feels like it melts juuust slightly in your mouth.
$12 nett, and comes with salad and miso soup. Fried chicken was crispy and the vinegar and mayo combination was delicious as well. And of course an onsen egg helped seal the deal. Really good option for lunch in the CBD. Skip the sashimi bowls - the last time I had the salmon and maguro bowl, it was not good at all with lukewarm slices of fish.
Drizzled with mayo and teriyaki sauce, each juicy piece of oyster was encased in batter and fried to crispy perfection. Bringing me back to my short school exchange at Hiroshima, the deep fried breaded oysters were a must-have there. Kaki (Japanese for oyster) also being one of the first few words we learned, I came to enjoy them in Japan whereas before I usually avoided them. Still loving Katanashi's lunch set menu, the Fried Oyster is just as satisfying as those I had in Hiroshima.
1 for 1 Wednesday and Thursday promotion on all dons! The seafood was quite fresh, portion was just nice for me but not full for the man though. PS: The ginger was very refreshing to have too!
Chase away your Monday blues with a visit to Hana Hana, Teppei's second Tras Link outlet. Come for their Monday Higawari (daily lunch special) — the famed Kaisen Don ($17.60) served with a free scoop of Negitoro (minced raw tuna, $8) alongside refillable side dishes such as stewed meat and potatoes or bean sprouts tossed in soy sauce. To beat the crazy lunch crowd, try to get here around noon to snag a seat! Pro tip: The same Kaisen Don and negitoro lunch special is served at Teppei, just next to Hana Hana, on Thursdays!

Finally at the much Raved & Hyped Sushiro for their Chirashi Don. I LOVE Chirashi Don, it's like meeting a long lost Lover whenever I order mine.
However, the Chirashi Don at Sushiro doesn't rekindle that sparkle of Love. Yes the Sashimi is fresh, Generous?? Not really actually, it's piled on a Mountain of Sushi Rice. Pretty Standard, nothing to Rave about. 🍣

ACAMASTIPS💮: Order their normal Bara Chirashi Don (💵S$12.80) if you must, one can't beat their price for a decent Chirashi Don though. For the same price of $24 I'd rather you next to The Sushi Bar or others. 🖖🏻
