Live To Eat (or Die Trying) - Flour And Shake Edition

Everything burger, sando, sarnie, tartine, Smørrebrød, rolls. The rule is always to down them with milkshake...and bring all the boys to yard.

Finally tried it! The patty is really worth the trip. Thick, juicy and done medium rare. And did I say the salad is really good too. Will be back again!

I was completely smittened at first bite. For starters, the ratio of the different components in this burger was pretty much perfect in my opinion. Then there's that incredibly juicy, beautifully seasoned beef patty (done medium rare as per my request) with its intoxicating smoky-from-the-grill aroma. Texturally, I thought they had it down pat too--a little more refined than the hand-chopped macho coarseness of The Butcher's Club one--probably the result of the meat being freshly ground in-house daily. I picked the cheddar over the Swiss cheese as I preferred something salty to balance the sweet caramelised onions. Holding all of that plus some crisp iceberg lettuce together were two sturdy halves of a toasted French artisanal roll. It was assuring to know I could take big bites properly without stuff slipping and sliding all over the place.
The accompanying coleslaw was decent but it lost at the popularity stakes to the handcut fries, which was enthusiastically polished off with some help from my dining companions.

3 x perfectly-done juicy 100% Black Angus beef patties, crispy bacon, aged cheddar, caramelised onions, guacamole, lettuce and fresh tomato in between toasted mini buns.
3 x the bliss. 😋😋😋
And let's not forget the fries.

Thick and well-seasoned, the beef patty of this burger falls into the tightly-packed category, which means it's pretty firm to the bite. Minimal but impactful toppings of a slice of perfectly-melted cheese and a couple of rocket leaves enhance the taste of it. With the little bucket of evenly-salted skinny fries tagging along, getting this burger means you're in for a filling and satisfying meal.

The hefty chunks of portobello loaded in this beef burger make it seem twice as meaty! With the milky-creamy sauce used to sauté the mushrooms as the delicious glue to keep all the good stuff in there together, crisp bacon included, this is another burger that gets two thumbs up from me.

I had no idea South Union Park makes every part of their burger in-house, yes, even the buns! This was something I learned over a conversation I had with Chef Terence after the dinner crowd had cleared last Sunday. He shared with us the great lengths he and his team had gone through to in order to create their ideal cheeseburger. There were even photos on his phone showing how they did side-by-side comparisons of different formulations for their beef patty.
Well, I really appreciated all the effort they put in because their cheeseburger was one of the more memorable ones I've eaten.
As big as the Whopper from Burger King, there is nothing superfluous about it, just basics done very well.
So there I was, sinking my teeth into light, pillowy buns that'd been toasted and buttered, and a really juicy, thick beef patty. To be honest, I've always been quite picky about the texture of patties but theirs suited me well - the ground meat wasn't bound too tightly or loose. The only other additions in the burger were melted aged cheddar and raspberry vinegar-cooked onions. Loved how the latter brought a subtle acidity that helped to cut the richness. Ditto the lightly-dressed lettuce served on the side.

I seem to be coming across some really excellent burgers of late. First there was South Union Park's massive creation, then there were the few amazing winners by Three Buns at Potato Head Folk and today, this truffle-icious dreamboat appeared. It is the only burger on the menu here, so you won't miss it.
Can I start by raving about those buns? While eating, I could literally smell the smokiness from their time on the grill and trust me, that added a lot to my dining pleasure. Draped with a big slice of melted cheese, the beef patty was thick, juicy and cooked to a perfect pink within. I was very pleased that when I cut my burger in half, there was no icky blood trickling from the patty (don't you just hate it when that happens?). Anyway, this showed that the patty was beautifully-cooked and properly rested before being assembled. Unlike the others mentioned above, this burger had lettuce in it. Now, that is usually a no-no in my books because I've been traumatised by soggy buns due to wet lettuce being shoved in. However, the one here was dry (save for the truffle sauce which I'll talk about in a moment) and crisp. And that made all the difference. Now, for that truffle sauce. It's the creamy type and has a strong truffle flavour which you'd surely adore if you are a truffle-lover. I found the thin slices of pickles a brilliant addition as they helped to balance the overall richness with a tangy crunch.

You don't need many options for a main course in a set lunch if the two that are offered are exceptional. The Georges Bank scallops, and the Iberico pork and foie gras burgers of Esquina's (the latter is pictured in this post), were proof of this.
I loved the fat patties in the pair of mini burgers. They were slightly smoky, beautifully seasoned, juicy, and I kid you not, melt-in-the mouth tender within. Not that it needed anything else but the addition of pulled pork and raw onion made the burger even more spectacular. Served on the side were little bowls of a cabbage slaw and tartare sauce that're extraordinarily good.
Highly recommended because if you get this a la carte, it costs $28++.

This beautiful Triple Bacon Burger right here will set you back by $19 (before GST), and it's a rather handsome return on your investment.

The 120 day grain fed beef patty is juicy, solidly savory and delightfully smoky from the grilling, while the beer caramelized onions counter its heavy, meaty savoriness with their sweetness. You can't go wrong with bacon, and Wildfire proves it by slathering some piquant bacon jam on the buns and slapping a strip of fatty, savory and oh-so-delicious streaky bacon atop the blanket of melted cheddar cheese thats been melted over the mouthwatering beef patty. Then, the burger is glazed in an addictive, house made Baconnaise sauce before the top bun is erected to seal the deal.

Though it may falter in the face of some of the more legendary burgers in town, it is definitely one of the better burgers around, and it's a sterling selection for whenever a burger craving strikes.

Normally I’d dismiss chain restaurants as being barely average, but Ambush’s food is actually surprisingly excellent. Case in point is their French Bleu Cheese & Beef Burger ($15.50++).

A thick and tremendously tasty ground beef patty is dressed up with a palatable pile of sweet caramelized onions and French Bleu cheese. The pungent scent of the Bleu cheese contrasts the sweet onions excellently while the richness of the melted cheese accentuates the richness of the beef patty.

The only real gripe I had with this burger is that the bottom bun was completely soggy by the time I’d chomped through half the burger, but in light of just how delicious everything else was, it’s probably a forgivable offense.

When in the mood for a solid burger, look to this new German burger bar in Orchard. Situated right next to the Thai Embassy, the garden-like space is perfect for a laid-back alfresco meal (there's indoor seating for scorching days too). They have a good selection of beef, chicken, vegetarian and vegan patties, so there really is something for everyone — come by with friends for a pre-movie meal, or gather with colleagues for dinner. The beef patties are made from Australian beef, which averages at 20 percent fat. This explains why the patties aren't very juicy and more like sausage filling, not that it bothered Burppler Raine Liu, who really enjoyed the Geissbock ($17) that comes topped with feta cheese, bacon and fig jam. The Wilder Western ($16) is another winning beef option — it's an umami bomb that comes with aged cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce and crispy shallots.
Pro tip: Visit at lunch (until 5pm) and add on $5 to make a meal out of it — the meal comes with a side (get the sweet potato fries!), a cold drink AND a hot drink. Modest appetites may wish to take Burppler Hwans Lim's advice to order one meal to share between two.
Avg price: $20
