A Malay breakfast staple of coconut rice and toppings like fried fish, crispy anchovies, egg and spicy sambal, nasi lemak is a well-loved dish that's enjoyed throughout the day, even at suppertime! It's easy to get your hands on a banana leaf-wrapped packet of the rice from hawker centres, but for a revolutionary nasi lemak experience, consider shelling out a bit more for a meal at The Coconut Club. This hip but laid-back Ann Siang Hill restaurant specialises in Nasi Lemak ($12.80) and they also serve a great cendol for dessert. Every ingredient on the plate is done extremely well, which more than justifies its price. The coconut rice is fragrant yet light, the chicken is expertly marinated and fried till golden and juicy, the anchovies are crisp, the fried-egg is spot on and the accompanying sambal packs a whole lot of punchy flavour and just enough heat. Yum! Make sure you save space for the Cendol ($3.80). The dessert is a revelation of how the simple combination of finely shaved ice, green jelly noodles, aromatic gula Melaka syrup and fresh coconut milk can be so, so tasty.

If you’re thinking of a hawker breakfast, then Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre is a must visit. Fun fact: before undergoing a two-year revamp in 2004, this hawker centre initially existed as a wet market (Seng Poh Road Market) that hosted non-permanent hawkers and nearby coffee shops under its roofs. Recently re-opened after a three-month renovation, this iconic venue is home to many morning crowd favourites including Jian Bo Shueh Kueh (#02-05) — known for their ultra soft, melt-in-your-mouth Chwee Kueh ($2 for five pieces) topped generously with fragrant preserved radish (chye poh) and chilli sauce on the side. For something more substantial, look no further than Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodles (#02-30). Despite the auntie’s grumpy demeanour, this stall is famous for its premium Char Siew Wanton Noodles ($5), featuring thick, juicy pieces of caramelised pork. It’s also said that the char siew here is more tender than most, as the meat is taken from the armpit of the pig (as compared to the commonly used pork shoulder). While you’re at it, don’t forget to check out 178 Lor Mee (#02-23) for their Lor Mee (from $3) — yellow noodles drenched in slurpy, flavourful gravy paired with crispy shark meat nuggets and deep-fried batter bits — comfort food at its best.

Spice up your cocktail routine at this new bar along Boat Quay, which doles out Peranakan-inspired bites and cocktails in a fun, laid-back setting — great for tipples with the girls. The people from the popular Five Ten restaurant are the same guys behind Bee Bee's, so expect the same punchy plates. The food selection is very compact, with only three items of the menu, but it changes every one to two months, so there's reason to return. For now, consider the Babi Braised ($8) topped with achar and an oozy egg, or one of two bruschetta options — the fiery Tuna Tartare Bruschetta ($7) comes spiced with basil, ginger flower and a host of other Peranakan flavours, while Auntie Mary's Bruschetta ($6) is topped with tomatoes and burrata. Pair these with beers from the tap ($8/half pint) or go for their cheeky and fun cocktails, all uplifted with the same Peranakan flavours. Try the Flora Nangka ($15) that shines with jackfruit, or the tropical-esque Sorry Not Sorry ($15), which sees a blend of bright, fruity ingredients including red dragon fruit, soursop, lime and galangal.

To find out just what kind of magic can happen when Japanese yakitori meets Szechuan shao kao (barbecue), pop by CHIKIN on Bukit Pasoh — hint: it's delicious. The skewers here are marinated in Szechuan peppercorn sauce and then grilled over Binchotan flames for smoky tastiness. There are various chicken parts ranging from the familiar like Thigh ($3) and Chicken Meatballs ($4.50) to the slightly offbeat like Windpipe ($4) to keep diners happy and interested, along with a small selection of beef and pork skewers ($6 each), a good variety of vegetables including Shishito Pepper ($3.50) and Shiitake Mushrooms ($3.50), and some izakaya-style plates like the Asahi Clams in Spicy Garlic Butter Dashi ($14). The smoky skewers pair well with their cocktails made with infused spirits (gin, sake, whisky) and Japanese flair — try the fruity and refreshing Sake Sangria ($19). There are also beers (from $8), wines (from $18 a glass) and a lot more in between. Let loose, but be prepared for the morning hangover. Pro tip: Ask them to taper down the skewers' spiciness if you can't take the heat.

This Japanese duo concept along Boat Quay has been drawing in the crowds with its wallet-friendly wagyu prices. The second outlet of Aburiya Japanese Wagyu Yakiniku (the first outlet along Robertson Quay is undergoing renovation) serves Japanese-bred, Kuroge (black cattle) A4-grade wagyu grilled on specially imported charcoal (bincho). The space is classy yet inviting, and the bincho doesn't leave a lingering smoky scent on your clothes — perfect for business meetings with clients. Prices start from $18 for raw wagyu, $20 for grilled meats and Family Sets (good for three to four pax) that include an assortment of wagyu and pork start from $50. The other concept, The Container Japanese Wagyu Tapas & Bar, occupies the patio section overlooking the river. Sticking to their nose-to-tail philosophy, the bartender infuses the wagyu fat from Aburiya into their whisky. Try it in the Amai Sanaa ($19), a creamy cocktail that comes with a spritz of lemon, dashi syrup and strawberry candy on the side. Be sure to have that with the highly Instagrammable 'Smoking' Wagyu Carpaccio ($20)!

I can't say I've had mussels cooked with Indian flavours before, but I was extremely pleased with the result. The juicy mussels paired surprisingly well with the spices and while the papadum was a great addition, all my attention was on the intriguing flavours of the seafood. This to me, was the star of the meal.

Be greeted with the aroma of teas and bakes upon entering. And also, filling the space are clean pastel walls with handpainted peonies as the center-piece. Hence, with the aesthetics down, the new addition to the Tras Street area and spot for cake lovers, Nesuto is brought to us by the same folks behind SHUU by KOKI - which sells oozy choux puffs in Raffles city and really (i dare say) one of the best choux in Singapore.

Focusing on a dainty selection of Entremet, tall sliced cakes and tea blends; it was tough to make decision since I only had space for two but I went ahead with their Suzette ($9.80) and Le Chocolat ($9) which the lovely staff at the counter took time to explain the intricacies of each crafted flavour. Not forgetting to pair it with their unique blends, love the Lychee Oolong for the light fruity-floral notes.

The lighter of the two, the Suzette features Dulcey 32% Cremeux, Valrhona Crunchy Chocolate Pearls, Ivoire 35% 'Grand Marnier' mousse, Orange Caramel and Santiago Tart. A tad milky, the distinct layers of vanilla cream, citrusy caramel and mousse didn’t go quite well for me as it was perhaps all too mellow, and together I couldn’t quite get the focal point of the dessert. But the textures were superbly soft as well as moist with a nice crunch from the chocolates. Foolproof, Nesuto’s Le Chocolat was presented with a beautiful mirror glaze and in it was Vanilla Opalys 33% Cremeux, Guanaja 70% Light Mousse sitting on decadent Chocolate Sponge - just perfect for fans of dark bitter-sweet chocolate.

And in their soft launch phase till tomorrow, you can still enjoy 20% off your bill!

Crumby White Chocolate complimented by Cocoa powder are the sidelines of this dessert. The highlight of the dish is the Pumpkin Juice. 🎃
Freshly juiced while the dessert is being prepared, the pumpkin juice lingers in your mouth similar to watermelon with a touch of spiciness that truly open ones eyes & palate. 😋

ACAMASTIPS💮: Instead of the traditional wine pairing, try their Soda Pairing that progresses along with your courses (💵S$12 for unlimited sodas) from The Tapping Tapir. 🥂

If you find waiting months for a seat at lavish omakase palaces tiresome, this well-kept secret that only requires two days' advance reservation is where you can go to enjoy an omakase that specialises in aged ingredients. Located in Fortune Centre on the second floor, the 12-seater place is run by Chef Aeron Choo on her own, who has spent many years learning the art of aging ingredients. Expect unique creations like aged egg yolk in red miso as well as beautifully aged eggplants and red scorpion fish sushi, one of the more unusual fish option available here. The food comes highly recommended by our Burpple community, perfect for impressing your date or celebrating a birthday over a memorable meal. The nine-dish Omakase Set ($68) is a preview of her prowess in the kitchen. Sit by the counter and watch as she works her magic; you won't want to miss anything she does! Pro tip: If you're celebrating a birthday, don't be shy to let her know. She might just whip up a hill of seafood chunks, drizzled with mentai mayo (like what she did for Burppler Dex Neo)!

New lifestyle space Como Dempsey is now home to renowned Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in Asia. In the day, The Dempsey Cookhouse and Bar is a picture-perfect dream — think white rattan chairs with intricate back details fitted around white marble tables, coupled with a lush greenery overhanging from the bar in the centre of the restaurant. At night, the space transforms into a cosy restaurant with mellow lighting — great for intimate date nights. For best value, we recommend skipping the Egg Caviar ($35) and spending your money on the Foie Gras Brulee ($19) instead. Expect a generous portion of goose liver cooked to perfection, and served with lychee and black olives for a fun mix of sweet and salty. Also try the Chef's specialty, Black Truffle and Fontina Cheese Pizza ($20), cooked in a cherry wood oven. Smothered generously with black truffle paste from France and topped with black truffle shavings, the crisp and light pizza is also sprinkled with fontina cheese to give it "a touch of creamy saltiness", according to Burppler Veronica Phua. She also loves how the small pile of frisee in the middle helps to cut through the richness.
