The duck itself, which was equal parts Confit and Yu Kee, tore apart with the carefreeness of a boy on post-PSLE holiday, while elsewhere the braised purple cabbage possessed sour-sweet hawthorne charms. 3.8/5

PS This expensive-looking bird only cost $13.90. Like whutt.

This might just be as close as you can get to having the real deal. Penang Signature only has one item on the menu — Assam Laksa ($3.50). White, slightly translucent noodles are pre-packed into takeaway containers, even if you're eating it there. Upon order, the staff gives the huge pot of broth a good stir before ladling out the lusciously rich gravy that Tastemaker Fabian Poon describes as "belacan, heh ko (prawn paste), lemongrass, assam and my favourite, mint leaves all mixed harmoniously together in a fish broth". Tastemaker Kenneth Lee loves how the "sweetish prawn paste mixes perfectly with the sour tamarind" without overpowering the other flavours. Pro tip: Request for the gravy to be stored separately from the noodles if you're going to have this taken away — it keeps the noodles from getting soft and soggy!

Zhong Zhong Fine Spice is a self-service stall that serves ngoh hiang (wu xiang). You'll find the usual ingredients like you tiao (dough fritters), pink sausages, and ngoh hiang (from $0.80), alongside more unique offerings like a Whole Stuffed Squid ($10). Tastemaker Vanessa Kou loves the less commonly seen battered fish, as well as the chilli sauce that comes with a splash of crunchy ground toasted peanuts. She also recommends getting a side of Bee Hoon (from $1) that is "expertly fried and nicely seasoned". All the ingredients are refried to order, and according to Tastemaker Wei Zhi Chiang, are "done well without being greasy", making this stall her favourite haunt (and her father's too!).

Bak Chor Mee (S$10)
Mee Poh dry, spicy
The queue was pretty short when I dropped by last Tuesday. Just a 15 minutes wait. Maybe because the regulars knew that the staffs were going for 15-minutes lunch break soon at 2.30pm. I was lucky to be the second last order to be made before the break.
Order that cannot be completed by 2.30pm will be given a queue number.
The serving looked a tab small for S$10. Not full after finishing it and seem to be lacking of the wow factor. The sauce was a tab bland although not too vinegary. Like that the pig's liver was cooked just right - tender. There's pieces of crispy flat fish 🐟 in it.

Most of us has tried, soup BKT (peppery/herbal) version. But have you tried the dry version of BKT? Intro by my Friend Willam the Geylang food expert, I finally decided to try.

Serving similar version in Malaysia, the soupy version is packed with tau Kee (bean curd skin) and pieces of tender ribs. The best part was it came with Mee Sua! The Mee sua managed to absorb the savoury taste of the soup with not so overpowering herbal taste. The pity thing was the Mee Sua was too little! Will ask the add more the next time!

Now for the dry version. The ribs were packed with Flavour with additional of mild spiciness thus giving it a shiok factor. Don't forget to add your dough fritters, to snitch up the remaining Essence!

Overall, this shop is an eye opener for me. While there are still lots of ways to reinvent, just one must be willing to explore. Oh! Remember to bring a bottle of water.

Bugis-goers have long been making the pilgrimage down to Shaw Towers for a taste of Ah Loy Thai's excellent dishes. The restaurant has since shifted into its newer and bigger digs along Tan Quee Lan Street, making this a top choice for a large group gathering. Here, the Thai Lemon Steamed Fish ($17) is a dish worthy of acclaim. In Burpple Tastemaker ni eat's words, the Thai Lemon Steamed Fish lemon sauce "gives you a bam of sourness but in a soothingly shiok way". It's spicy, zesty and sweet — the kind you'd want to drizzle over your rice, or slurp up like soup. You'd want to load your table with other Thai dishes too, like the tender and crisp Garlic Pork ($9.40) and Tom Yum Goong ($8.90 for seafood). The latter has a perfect blend of spicy and sour that spice-loving Singaporeans will enjoy. Quash the heat with a cup of refreshing Thai iced tea ($2.50).

Office workers in Bugis looking for a new dining option will want to note this down. The second outlet of the famed Lucky Plaza Yong Tau Foo is tucked away on the second floor of Bugis Cube, and sports a shorter queue (for now). It's well known for its incredibly low prices and unique Yong Tau Foo ingredients like Korean mushrooms and fried meatballs. While many Burpplers love having their YTF dry, allow yourself some indulgence and go for the Curry Laksa. According to Burpple Tastemaker Jean Kao, it's less lemak than laksa and has a tinge of hae bi hiam flavour in it. When picking out Yong Tau Foo ($0.60 per piece, minimum eight pieces), don't miss out on the delightfully juicy Korean mushrooms. Everyone, including Tastemaker Jean, insists on having at least one of it in their meal because "they become so plump after soaking, so biting into them is a delight". Be sure to add a spoonful of their homemade belachan chilli and fried shallots for a spicy kick!

A quick search on Hong Lim Food Centre revealed this to be on quite a number of must-eat lists, so seeing that the queue was manageable (less than 20 mins) at around 4pm, I took my chances since I seldom visit this hawker area.
:
I give high marks for the right amount of wetness loaded with egg and the bountiful ‘hum’, but… BUT… No ‘lup cheong’, I… I cannot. Sadly, this has been the case with the CKT stalls at Tanjong Pagar too. Heck, it’ll be a really tough choice, but I’d rather have Chinese sausage over pork lard *collective gasp* So while this is really good, it's not going into my list when I come up with one.

With generous amount of fresh seafood (crayfish, clams, fish, scallops, prawns, lobster balls etc), this is super hearty. Most importantly, i love the soup! Light but packed with the fresh essence from the seafood and i dont get thirsty drinking it. In fact, im craving for this nowwww!
