If you only have time for one meal in Jalan Besar, let it be this widely acclaimed, family-run laksa stall. Sungei Road Laksa's coconut milk broth is simmered over charcoal fire, resulting in a flavourful yet light gravy that you can slurp up without feeling jelat. The sweet yet savoury broth is mildly spicy, so those looking to enjoy a spicier gravy will want to follow Tastemaker Wei Zhi Chiang's advice and stir in a few spoonfuls of their sambal. Coupled with fresh cockles, fishcake slices and slippery bee hoon, the one-size only Laksa ($3) is eaten with just a spoon — no chopsticks needed!
Avg Price: $5 per person

Located in the basement of Berseh Food Centre, this corner stall is the spot to head to when the orh luak craving strikes. The stall only operates from 5.30pm till midnight daily, so make this a part of your supper plan. The Fried Oyster Omelette ($5) automatically comes cooked with Lim's fiery chilli, so alert the uncle if you can't handle the heat. It's also significantly more gooey than most oyster omelettes, and comes with incredibly plump Korean-imported oysters that Tastemaker Jason Wong loves. Be sure to coat everyhing with the homemade chilli that comes on the side!

Though I'm personally not so much into the noodles, which I found tad dry & slightly sticky (perhaps we spent too long taking photos), I do honestly swear that the broth here is to die for! 💕 Robust & intensely packed with umami prawn flavours, this first-rated red concoction is sure bound to have you going for the entire bowl, no spoon required. Good soup & table manners don't go together at least for me 😂
P.S. Regular & medium size versions are going for $6 & $12 respectively, just $1 increment from their original stall at Pek Kio market, but with aircon.

This humble stall tucked away in Teck Ghee Square Market and Food Centre doesn't get much attention, but it should. Previously located in Bendemeer Food Centre, the underrated stall dishes out plates of wok hei-ladened Char Kway Teow (from $3), loaded with fresh cockles and lup cheong — so good! Depending on who's cooking, expect the noodles to turn out a little differently. The father cooks a wetter version while the son does it a little more dry, resulting in more wok hei. Tastemaker Cassie Ong determines a good plate of char kway teow by the presence of wok hei and egg, and therefore prefers the son's version more, liking that "you can taste the egg in every bite". Be sure to have what Tastemaker Justin Teo loves most in both plates — the really crispy pork lard!

Run by young hawkerpreneur, Desmond, this stall in 628 Ang Mo Kio Market sees long, snaking queues of up to an hour on weekends. Our Burpple Tastemakers and many others in the queue find it worth the wait, thanks to its robust soup and generous portions of seafood. Various shellfish are available here, from Big Prawn Noodles ($8) to Crayfish Noodles ($13) and the crowd favourite, Lobster Noodles ($24.90). The latter comes with two halves of an Asian Lobster, or Colombian Lobster if the Asian lobster is not in season ($29.90). Tastemaker Justin Teo notes that the fresh lobster meat can be "easily removed from its shell with a light pull using chopsticks". The umami-rich soup owes its distinct taste and colour to the use of prawn shells and pork ribs, not MSG. Tastemaker Felicia Sim also loves how each bowl, regardless of size, comes loaded with clams, which really sweeten the soup. Pro tip: Noodles and ingredients run out quickly, especially on rainy days, so best to head down early to snag a bowl!

Look at the CHEESY GOODNESS 👌🏻 Free flow of meat, vegetables and frozen items that can be dipped into the Cheese fondue ! And once you are sick of the cheese fondue, you can change to any soup base anytime.

This casual restaurant near Kembangan MRT Station is drawing crowds for its Cheesy Nacho BBQ Hotplate ($22.90 for deluxe, $30.70 for premium). While you could opt for traditional mookata here, the hot plate experience allows you to grill your meats AND have a pot of gooey, rich melted cheese (a combination of Cheddar-Jack and mozzarella) to dunk them in after grilling! Burppler Dex Neo recommends opting for the premium buffet, which comes with a lot more fresh seafood sourced directly from Jurong Fishery Port — think squid, tiger prawns, scallops and crayfish —, along with veggies, carbs and meats like kurobuta pork. If and when the cheese proves too much to handle, request to replace it with a soup base instead — choices include chicken and corn, tom yum, tomato, kimchi and silky porridge. Trust us, it'll be a much welcome respite. Drinks are not included in the price, but you can always add $4.80 for a free flow of drinks and ice cream. We bet you're going to be rolling your way out of here. Pro tip: The restaurant offers a promotion price from Tuesdays to Thursdays — the deluxe buffet is only $19.90, while the premium buffet is $26.70!

The iconic restaurant on North Bridge Road has been serving up authentic Teochew-style fish steamboat since 1927, so you can be assured that these guys know what they're doing. For starters, they insist on using only charcoal-fired steamboats, and every batch of their signature fish soup is cooked for over five hours for maximum flavour as well as nourishment. There is a selection of fresh fish including pomfret and snapper, and the menu helpfully describes the texture and flavour of every option. If in doubt, go for the Red Grouper Fishboat (from $38 for small), which comes with generous chunks of firm, smooth and succulent grouper, along with plenty of greens and cubed yam. The charcoal fire adds a lovely depth to the flavour. If steamboat alone doesn't suffice, order zi char dishes like their popular Prawns in Golden Pumpkin Sauce (from $18.80 for small) and Butter Crayfish ($38 for medium). Pro tip: This original outlet is often packed. Head over to their second outlet on Owen Road if you're stuck in the queue.

Located across the road from the famous Rochor Original Beancurd, this lavishly-furnished restaurant in Wilkie Edge opens till 5am daily, making it a great spot for supper in town. If it's a cool night, sit alfresco to enjoy the breeze while you huddle over your hotpot. First pick your soup base — the tomato broth ($13.80) and collagen broth ($16.80) are really comforting and tasty, and not at all watered-down. The vegetables selection is on the pricey side, so you might want to focus on jazzing up your hotpot with their selection of premium meats and seafood — we love the Kurobuta Pork Belly ($13.80) and super thinly sliced US Wagyu Beef Striploin ($24.80). To avoid overcooking the beef, use your chopsticks to swish the meat in the hot broth for just a few seconds. P.S. We love the ever attentive service here too! Pro tip: To feast without worrying about the bill, come for their buffet lunch (noon-5pm, $21.80) or dinner (6-10pm, $32.80), but take note that beef is not part of the buffet selection and will have to be ordered separately.
