Fatty pork belly lacquered in a dark soy glaze, sat snug with pickled cabbage, cilantro and peanuts in a pillowy mantou bun. This is a fair rendition of a classic that I wouldn’t mind ordering again as nibbles to go with Zui Hong Lou’s cheap but excellent cocktails.

Taste: 3.5/5

Coincidentally, this is the first time that I’m having the Meatsmith Cheeseburger ($15) and it will definitely not be the last. The Texas rodeo-styled steakhouse with cowboys-esqued service staff smokes their meat daily and it is pretty evident from the first bite. Rustic, non-compromising, just pure greasy goodness of what a cheeseburger should be.

This latest concept by the Travis Masiero Restaurant Group is a lovely spot to enjoy some seriously tasty pizza — certainly good enough to justify the higher prices. The playlist is funky but it can get noisy in here, so file this away for a night out with friends instead of a romantic date. Settle into one of the booth seats and order a platter of the Blue Label Chicken Wings ($14 for a small portion, $28 for large) to share. According to Burppler Veronica Phua, the fresh wings are prepared in a four-step process — brine, sous vide, fry and glaze. This means very juicy meat, slicked in a gorgeously sticky, golden brown sauce, that doesn't require much more oomph from the blue cheese ranch dip served on the side. As for pizzas, theirs are made using a long ferment dough (takes two days just to be ready), which results in a crust that's not at all floury, and with a slightly oily (but yummy) distinctly crisp bite. Veronica liked the Dr. Pepperoni ($31), which combines red sauce, mozzarella, capers, chilli oil, pepperoni and lots of sesame seeds. Consider the Housemade Soft Serve ($8, additional $2 per topping) for dessert; it's smooth, thick and creamy, and a lovely way to end the meal.

The "choke" part of the name stems not from any kinky asphyxiation fetish on the part of mixologist Liam Baer but from the earthy artichoke present in the liqueur element of the cocktail, whilst elsewhere the "smoke" aspect, courtesy of the Scotch whiskey used, is very self-explanatory upon your first sip, a combination of cigar breath and chimney chic.

Major love for this creation! Coconut Tau Huey was big on flavor but light on the palate. The pumpkin puree added a rich texture to the dessert, with gula melaka sago and crispy coconut bits breaking things up nicely.

Absolutely can't be missed! Melt-in-your-mouth flavorful beef slices. Great on its own, but the white cabbage and miso sauce added a different dimension, simply brilliant! 😍

I'm putting it out there right now, YOU NEED TO COME HERE FOR THEIR UNAGI BENEDICT ($23++). But otherwise, our kurobuta "pork cheek" ragout (???) ($19++) was quite mehhh... Best thing about the dish was the fungus so like basically nothing much. DON'T let that deter you from the real deal tho aka the unagi Benedict. A fantastic fusion dish that combines fried mantou with that umami from the unagi and a whole dollop of an amazing yuzu hollandaise. Every mouthful was an ooh and ahh!

You have me at fried chicken but coriander mayo??? JUST TAKE MY MONEH🤑. Super juicy & tender spiced fried chicken w zesty, creamy coriander mayo. This would be soooo guud w ice cold beeeeeer 🍻 Would make a great TGIFriday-beer-in-the-afternoon lunch!

Remember when we said we couldn't wait for Xiao Ya Tou's brunch menu (which by the way, has a drool-worthy Unagi Eggs Benedict)? Now, there's also lunch to look forward to! Story goes, when Xiao Ya Tou takes her beauty nap, her lover, Little Husband, cooks on her behalf from 10am to 4pm (weekdays only). Little touches like how the menu is folded into a pocket-sized book and slipped to you discreetly by the staff makes the whole dining experience that much more fun. The menu is simple — two mains, four salads, four sides, one drink and a dessert. The sides and salads were standouts, especially the incredibly moreish Fried Chicken ($14) with a tasty coriander mayo that we're still thinking about, and the shatteringly Crispy Egg Salad ($14) topped with swimmer crabmeat and a tangy Thai dressing. For mains, the Pho ($17) comes with a choice of wagyu striploin or brisket. The slow-cooked broth is not as flavourful as we would have liked it to be, but the meats are cooked expertly. Wash it all down with a cup of Vietnamese Coffee ($6).

When it comes to steak, I tend to go into caveman mode. Keep it simple with a sprinkle of sea salt and I'm sold. However, this style of preparation I had at one-month-old Thirteen Duxton Hill which involves, anchovy, broccoli and whole toasted hazelnuts, was strikingly delicious.
I enjoyed the counterpoise the "green-ness" of the vegetable (sparked with lemon juice) played to the richness of the flank steak and smooth, savoury sauce. Loved the textural excitement and aroma the hazelnuts brought to the dish as well - that rounded things off beautifully in my opinion.
Thirteen Duxton Hill is about a month old and the lovely couple behind it are Chef JP and Sally who were the co-owners and founders of Lume in Melbourne. They are super down-to-earth, friendly and easy to chat with. As his title suggests, Chef JP does the cooking (and hopefully, baking in the future) with the help of his sous chef Roland while his partner, Sally, who's a sommelier, doubles up as the general manager. The casually elegant restaurant is situated at the top of Duxton Road, occupying the last unit along the row of shophouses.
Their menus are handwritten not just for the sake of being charming (which it is) but because what they serve that day is dependent on what Chef finds at the market in the morning. How exciting is that. Definitely the kind of place I'll want to return again and again.

Helmed by the previous head chef of Osteria Mozza, Angeleno serves up a menu of Italian-American fare, so don't be surprised to find American cold cuts alongside traditional Italian dishes. The restaurant is super proud of its red sauce, which forms the base of the flavourful Angeleno's Meatballs ($22), served with wood-fired polenta, as well as the hearty Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese ($31). In the mood for meat? Go for the Signature Veal Chop Parmigiana ($75, enough for two). Covered in a blanket of melting mozzarella, the crust is crisp golden and the veal is tender. Save space for the luscious Chocolate Pudding ($15).
