Going Bananas For Banana Bread
Baked in-house, this is a no-frills slice of wholesome goodness. It may not be as banana-y or fanciful as others I've tried (and collapsed in ecstasy over), but nonetheless, I feel it's worth a B+ at least.
At first, I had thought this was a Carrot Cake after misreading the description on the display card. However, the cafe's baker who happened to be standing close by, politely corrected me, and said the magic words, "No, it's a Banana Cake". In an instant, I was all over that display stand like a rabid monkey. Ordered one and without hesitation, burrowed into its dense, moist, banana-rich cakeness. Keeping it extra interesting were small pineapple chunks, a dash of cinnamon and loads of voluptuous cream cheese frosting. I truly enjoyed this, especially since I know for a fact that it's baked in-house.
This is a RIDICULOUSLY GOOD heap of total homemade awesomeness! Whoever thought of putting vanilla yogurt together with the banana bread is seriously genius. And as though that isn't fantastic enough, there's caramelised bananas and roasted macadamia nuts too. Whatever else you order, make sure you leave space in your tummy for this.
Initially, I'd feared that the icing sugar would be an overkill in sweetness but that proved to be unfounded. Instead, this was revealed to be an immensely aromatic, wonderfully moist and banana-rich piece of paradise. The price was such a pleasant surprise too, especially in this day and age.
And my quest for banana cakes continues.... This was the one I had at Wheeler's Yard. Its less conventional sliced cake shape surprised me but boy, did it taste good! That thick layer of rich dark chocolate was an absolute delight - a perfect complement to the moist banana cake.
Whoa! A whole banana walnut loaf for $8 and an attractive looking one at that with the half banana and sprinkle of coarse sugar crystals on top. Measuring approximately 6 inches by 3 and a half inches, it can be shared amongst 4 to 6 people. I find that it tastes especially good after being warmed up in the microwave, as it becomes more moist and fluffy. The heat also fans the fragrance of the banana.
When it comes to banana cakes, I am embarrassed to admit I'm a recent convert (what have I been missing all these years!) Which means I have to make up for plenty of lost time pretty damn quick :)
This morning, it was a slice of Brawn & Brains' homemade one that I tried. Their version has chopped walnuts hunkered down side-by-side with them sweet bananas. A quick pop in the oven gave the cake a light crunchy outer, which I liked very much.
Anyone knows of other good places for banana cake that I can check out?
How creative is the name, and so apt as well as it's truly a bonanza of a banana bread. I'm loving this fragrant and thick slice of in-house baked goodness which is none-too-sweet and plenty moist. The subtle crunch (a result of its brief stopover in the oven enroute to me) is exceptionally lovely when paired with a scoop of vanilla bean ice-cream dusted with some chocolate powder (got to pay a bit more for this of course).
My ongoing banana bread/cake quest is shaping up to be so much fun.
