“Apong”, “Appam Balik”, “Turnover Pancake”, - whatever you call it, is the supremely fragrant pancake that comes into existence when egg batter is swirled in a hot pan. They come in thick or thin styles and generally have some sort of filling (eg. ground peanuts, coconut). In the case of “Ipoh Garden Apong”, a stall located inside the intriguingly-named “Let’s Rock” coffeeshop, they make them very small and very thin, and therefore, also very easy to forget how many you have eaten until it’s too late 😂.
Watching the lady hawkers at work is soothing. There’s a seamless flow to their pour-swirl-shut-open-peel-fold action which means they can churn out those babies very swiftly. And they have to because customers order dozens of their delicately soft yet slightly crisp-around-the-edges Apongs at one go.
