The Basement at Hong Leong Building had seen quite an exodus of its F&B tenants during the height of COVID-19, with most of the establishments having moved out of their premises due to the lack of business from office workers who had to work from home. Taking over the former spot of the now-defunct Tokidon in a corner of The Basement is Kinber Kopi. Occupying one of the more squarish shop spaces located within the compound, Kinber Kopi is relatively decent-sized; the shop unit having sufficient space to have a dine-in area with pretty functional furniture that allows patrons to sit and eat with reasonable comfort — it does get rather claustrophobic when the queues start to get longer and with multiple people standing around waiting to collect their takeaway orders however. Being more of a beverage kiosks that also serves hot food, Kinber Kopi’s hot food revolves around Sandos, as well as Grilled Chicken Chop or Fried Chicken Cutlet served with sunny side-up and rice — the Sandos here comes with a good variety of fillings to choose from, while the Grilled Chicken Chop / Fried Chicken Cutlet offerings do come with different sauces such as Brown Sauce, Black Pepper Sauce as well as Rock Sugar Honey Sauce. Beverages available at Kinber Kopi includes familiar local selections such as Nanyang-style Kopi and Teh, as well as Milo, Honey Lemon, Kumquat etc.; they do, however, have a Iced Coconut Oil Coffee on their beverage menu — perhaps their take on bulletproof coffee.

Visiting Kinber Kopi on a weekday in office for lunch, we found ourselves going for the Grilled Chicken Chop as we were looking for something that was more on the substantial side. We eventually settled for the the Grilled Chicken Chop with Salted Egg Sauce. Available in ala-carte or as a set, the set sees a beverage of the patron’s choice being added. Digging into the Grilled Chicken Chop, we found the chicken chop itself to be rather decent — no doubt the chicken here lacks of the crispness that some others might have due to the inclusion of the skin, but we did found the slab of chicken to be sufficiently flavourful and reasonably tender. We weren’t too big of a fan of the salted egg sauce here though; the salted egg sauce does feel a tad too buttery — starting off with a rather mellow hint of butter, the light hint of savouriness from the salted egg comes through just a few seconds before the buttery notes starts to go away, seemingly lacking the oomph of those of the creamier versions as well as that saltish notes that comes with the variants that come dry. What we liked however was the curry leaves — these were crisp and carried its distinctive hint of flavours; probably better done than some of the zichar restaurants out there. Also done well was the sunny side-up; peculiarly done in a square-shaped form, the yolk was nothing short of runny, though the way it was executed also meant that their version lacked those crisp, browned edges that some would look forward to having.

Was really pretty ecstatic to have a Kinber Kopi as a spot to get my salted egg chicken cravings resolved but the variant of salted egg sauce that they are serving just was not to what we would have expected — the buttery sauce just did not gel well with us considering how we love our salted egg dishes to come all creamy and sinful; you know the ones that would work great alongside the white rice. That being said, we are probably still keen to give their Sandos a go — their Sandos are priced really reasonably at $4.00 as a set bundled with a beverage of the patron’s choice. Also felt that the Kopi that we had was actually pretty well-pulled; one that is sufficiently aromatic without being overly sweetened by the condensed milk. Would probably say that Kinber Kopi is a rather interesting spot in the heart of the Central Business District; an option that we would be fine with having if the queue is manageable in comparison to the same with the other establishments around its vicinity.
