This old school bakery at Tanglin Halt was something I’d traveled from the East for- a paltry effort compared to the coming 70 year old baker owner’s daily efforts to bake an assortment of bread and cakes with his wife.
I preferred the cakes here, for those moist sponge with smooth buttercream was something my home baked version couldn’t triumph. Also the orange flavouring chiffon cake was delightful too.
While I am glad uncle gets to retire once the community around Tanglin Halt goes into our history books for good- what a loss of heritage it would be should these old school bakeries gradually dwindle and vanish one day.
P.S: look at that old school plastic bread tray!

If you are into old school bakes, you should really check out Hock Ann Confectionery. Chanced upon them when we first explored Tanglin Halt Food Centre in the same area, where their donuts brought on a sense of nostalgia. Still a must-have item every visit. Just as I was rejoicing over this hidden gem, it was also devastating to hear that they are closing this year due to redevelopment.
Although the cakes were embellished completely with butter cream and chocolate rice, rainbow rice or grounded peanuts, the layered sponge cake was surprisingly light. As I grew up, I became less fond of cream but the vibrant colours surely brought back so much childhood memories, especially the blueberry jam topping.
One of the best pandan chiffons I have eaten in a long while .
Soft and not too sweet and made only with fresh pandan extract - nothing artificial .
This old school bakery ( which someone reminds me of love confectionary at Alexandra village ) hides in a corner of Commonwealth ( near the hawker centre ) and has been providing fresh bakes for the last 50 years .
They also have cute small little cream cakes , Swiss rolls , whole marble and butter cakes and the quintessential ole school spongy vanilla cup cakes .
I hope they continue to stay around for many many for years to come .
Chanced by this old school bakery and was intrigued with the layout of the shop to the types of cakes and breads sold .
I casually asked the Auntie if this shop has been around for 50 years and she said yes🙊.
Decided try a piece of the pandan chiffon and it was so good I bought 2 whole cakes home.
For someone who bakes - you can trust me when i say this pandan chiffon is so good. Made fully with natural pandan juice and not too sweet at all...
I can’t wait to go back to try their old school butter cakes and sponge cakes ....
