The boys at grit will be closing and transiting to brick and mortar soon. Two lovely beef patties coated with gooey cheese and smothered with sautéed onions. Grab it while you still can!

this is a hidden gem among the prawn mee, wanton mee and roast meat stalls of pei kio market. $9.90 gets you a double cheeseburger with two patties cooked to medium, blanketed in processed cheese and topped with caramelized onions. the vegetables at the side are a mere memory as the beef takes centrestage; roughly chopped for a good bite and pleasantly juicy. though not as much char and burnt bits as i would like, it's hard to fault the price tag. oh, and it comes with a side of cheese fries 😬

I was excited for the Double Cheeseburger ($9.90 nett) after seeing a picture on Instagram. But the patties turned out to be quite dry. Yep, both of them. Onions were a little too charred, too. I am quite fussy about my burgers though, don't know if I'm being too harsh.

Served with a side of fries (all burgers are); for some reason, this came with shoestring fries with a yellow sauce on top. Felt cheesy but not in a overpowering/strong way. I liked it, but I wish I knew what it was. I'm gonna guess it's cheese.

I really wanted to love this experience... But sadly, it fell short.

Escargot Aglio Olio ($10.00 nett)

I like this concept - escargots are totally my thing. But this didn't feel like Aglio Olio. Lovely generous portions of sliced garlic, but I expected the usual olive oil & just that alone as the sauce. For some reason, the sauce was brown & lightly savoury... Maybe the escargot "sweat"ed this brown sauce out? I don't know.

Also would've liked the pasta to be more al dente, but this is my own preference.

I guess it's a case of mismatched expectations.. 😔

The Double Cheeseburger - thick stacks of beef patties and fragrant, fluffy buns!

From GRIT, a relatively newly-opened hawker stall at Pek Kio Market and Food Centre. Apart from the fattiness of the beef which made it rather leathery and difficult to chew, the dish was overall pretty decent as one could definitely taste the smoky char from the grilling of the meat and the mashed potatoes were delightfully smooth, creamy and a wee bit cheesy. They also do serve other dishes such as a pasta, a roasted chicken dish and burgers which seemed to look pretty impressive. Definitely a place to try at Pek Kio for something a little different if there is some cash in the wallet to spare.
