[CLOSED] grEAT

I’m not vegan or vegetarian, but from time to time I try to cut down on meat. I love veggie burgers because they’re much more fun to eat than salads, and you almost forget you’re only eating veggies.

grEAT opened quite recently at the basement of Tanjong Pagar Centre, but doesn’t draw crowds like Daily Cut and the other eateries nearby. I wonder why, because the Signature Smoky Burger ($7.90 a la carte, $9.90 as a combo with a drink) was delicious, with a crispy mushroom patty and a slightly tangy sauce.

I’d say this is on par with VeganBurg (one of my favourites) and better than nomVnom.

For fuss-free meatless lunches in Tanjong Pagar, consider popping by this stall in Tanjong Pagar Centre. Run by the same guys behind vegetarian restaurant Idealite Singapore, grEAT serves a compact menu of vegetarian burgers. We weren't too crazy about the Grilled King Trumpet Mushroom Burger ($6.90 for a la carte) as the sliced mushrooms make it real messy to eat. Instead, try the Signature Smoky ($7.90 for a la carte) — the patty has great bite and is nicely smoky, and the citrusy sauce brings everything together perfectly. We only wish that the patty is just a tad larger to fit the big and fluffy buns. Add $2 to get a small smoothie or small side salad. Oddly, there are no fries served at this burger joint, but they do have Crunchy Tempura Mushroom ($3) if you'd like. Pro-tip: Grab a seat at the spacious dining area beside Guzman Y Gomez.

Our favourite from those we tried, I like the textured bite from the smoky patty as well as the large fluffy buns. I only wish they created a bigger patty, so it’s less bread and more flavour in every bite. An extra $2 gets you a smoothie or small salad on the side. I also wish they served fries; there’s tempura mushrooms ($3) but it’s not the same.

The people behind Idealite Vegetarian Restaurant just open their new concept store at Tanjong Pagar Centre focusing on meatless burgers, smoothies and drinks. Their burgers are all 100% meat free, no gluten meat, no MSG and no artificial colouring.
