I made a lunch reservation at Yardbird to celebrate a birthday, and we were thoroughly impressed with the food and service. When we first arrived, the maître d made sure we were checked in, took our temperature and sanitized our hands. She then led us to a small table near the entrance as she checked if there were more tables inside. Shortly after, she brought us to our booth table near the kitchen, which was quite cosy.

Our server was lovely - a middle-aged gentleman with salt and pepper hair - whose name I unfortunately cannot remember. He introduced all the signature dishes and recommendations, and we ordered the famous Chicken ‘n’ Watermelon ‘n’ Waffles and Shrimp and Grits. The food didn\'t take long at all and was served with wonderful presentation, both fine dining-style and full of Southern charm.

The waffles were filled with cream cheese and were mouth-wateringly scrumptious without being too rich. I expected the chicken to be served in cubes, but it was in fact half a chicken, fried to juicy gloriousness. The watermelon stole the show, lightly spiced and the perfect palate cleanser. The dish came with maple syrup and their signature hot sauce.

The Shrimp and Grits were the underrated surprise. The polenta was buttery goodness and melt-in-your-mouth, and it complemented the grilled smokiness of the shrimps brilliantly. It was paired with a layered sweet-salty jus and topped with onions and grilled tomatoes.

These two dishes were enough to tick our scorecard, but our server brought another surprise - a birthday ice cream - to round off the meal. I\'d even forgotten myself that I had indicated it was a birthday celebration when I made the reservation but Yardbird certainly didn\'t. It was simple vanilla but perfect after a hearty lunch, which we had with some sencha tea.

All in all, we had a wonderful time at Yardbird. Our server was attentive and made sure we had enough water at all times. The food was delicious and we wouldn\'t hesitate to come back again. It certainly is a bit pricey for an everyday meal, but quite worth it for special occasions. Don\'t be too put off by the price tags, as the portions are big and enough to feed two. A memorable and satisfying meal indeed.
