Community Chows: May 2018

From spanking new outlets to hidden gems, here are this month’s finds from the community.

Apiary

Beat the heat with this new find on Apiary’s menu that Burppler Xing Wei discovered. The Tropical Addiction hits all the right notes with the creamy coconut ice cream, sweet mango sorbet, tangy passion fruit sorbet, a nutty almond dacquoise base and fluffy Italian meringue. Alternatively, try the Ispahan, which features the foolproof ménage à trois of rose, lychee and raspberry.

Here’s an extra reason to #treatyoself to an ice cream egglet waffle bouquet this month. From now till June 4, Lickety will match every purchase and gift it to children of ex-offenders as a part of their #ProjectHAPPYSCOOP in collaboration with ISCOS Singapore, Fairy God Parent Programme and Yellow Ribbon Singapore. Thanks for sharing this, Burppler Blanche Tan.

Love prawns? Next time you’re here for a hotpot sesh, make sure you opt for the new flavour-packed prawn base! The intense stock is made by simmering prawn heads and is perfect for swishing the new pork belly varieties (from $8.80). Burppler Siming T describes the stock to be “simply unforgettable because of its richness, and the quality is comparable with some of those renowned prawn noodles out there.” Slurp until shiok!

Coocaça (Liat Towers)

Want to indulge without the bulge? With Coocaça’s new soft serve, you can! It comes in three sizes ($2.50/mini, $4.90/small and $6.90/regular). Opt for a single flavour — Natural Yogurt or Acai Berry, or go for the Twist and get the best of both worlds. Either way, we’re with Burppler Rachel Xie that this is “super refreshing on a hot, sunny day.” The regular-sized soft serve comes with a topping of your choice and homemade granola.

Do note that the soft serve is available exclusively at this outlet.

Nine Fresh Desserts Taiwan

You may have tried these local flavours-inspired items on Nine Fresh’s menu, but Burppler Cassie Ong shares that they’ve tweaked their recipes to make it more authentic! The Chendol Cup ($2.90) with grass jelly, chendol, attap seeds, red bean and taro balls now comes with gula Melaka and coconut milk! If you’re not a big fan of durian, take her advice to request for the durian-flavoured balls to be omitted.

The Dark Gallery (Takashimaya)

The Dark Gallery has opened a full-fledged café and chocolate boutique in town and it’s much more spacious and comfy compared to their first outlet according to Burppler Kris Lim. It is also home to Singapore’s very first Mod-Bar pour-over and steam system, so a cuppa is a must here especially when they’ve got beans sourced from Melbourne’s Padre Coffee and Tokyo’s Fuglen! Try the Single Origin Pour Over ($6.50) exclusively available at this outlet, or go for the Single Origin + Chocolate Pairing ($12) combo a go — it comes with a chocolate treat and mini pastry.

Omoomodon

Do you know that Omoomo Concepts is now Halal-certified? Tuck into their pocket-friendly Japanese-Korean bowls with more friends at all outlets (Downtown East, Kallang Wave Mall, Northpoint City and The Star Vista). The Yes Sir! Yes Sir! ($12) and Bird’s Nest ($10) remain firm community favourites!
