Best Dishes Our Editors Ate This week

The editors of Burpple dine out several times a week, if not per day, which means we’re always encountering standout dishes that deserve time in the limelight. Here’s the very best of everything the team has eaten recently.

Follow Burpple editors each week as they share their favourite dishes around town

Mutton Varuval Tosai at Yarl TTDI

Yarl offers a delectable array of Northern Sri Lankan food unrivalled in town. The menu at Yarl is intriguing because everything appears to be wonderful, from big meals to light nibbles to chew on. Yarl Mutton Varuval Thosai is the dish to look forward to. The Mutton Varuval Thosai is a stir-fried dish of soft mutton bits with fragrant Sri Lankan spices and aromatics. It's a popular choice among Yarl's customers, and it's perfect for lunch or dinner!

Beef Bacon Quiche at Croisserie Plaza Damansara

If you live in Damansara Heights, you'll know that Croisserie is the greatest bakery in the neighbourhood for all of your pastry needs. Croisserie has been open for five years, but many people still consider it their go-to bakery. There are rows and rows of pastries to choose from when you go there. But the beef bacon quiche is to die for. The price might seem a little steep for a little quiche, but trust us when we say it is so worth it that you might get a second order because it is just that good!

Fried Chicken With Sambal Mattah at Jeda Cafe

Feel-good chicken in the form of fillet-topped rice has taken over lunchtime. Start with Indonesian specialities like What's The Mattah, which is thigh meat that is gently crispy to the bite and naturally delicate to the chew, smothered with Balinese sambal matah, fragrant with shallots and lemongrass, and spicy enough to deliver pleasure.

For an extra RM1.50, upgrade the steamed rice to Jeda rice (fragrant with crispy shallots, shredded kaffir lime leaves, and torch ginger blossom); we also added a dish of juicy Padang-style eggplant balado (RM6) and deliciously creamy sambal bawang (RM2). The dish exceeded expectations in terms of taste and texture; the ingredients were fresh and healthful, and the cooking was expertly executed, providing vibrant flavours and rich textures.

Tiger Prawns, Asari Clams Pasta at Yellow Brick Road

We went for a second visit to Yellow Brick Road at The Five. We had such a good experience there we decided to try the Beyond the Sea pasta. The pasta comes with battered tiger prawns, Asari Clams, prawn bisque, spaghetti and baby spinach. The pasta was beautifully plated and the flavour was amazing the clams give you a little bit of sea dash (in a good way). The prawn bisque really ties the dish together.

Aromatic Crispy Duck at  My Humble Bowl

My Humble Bowl has located just a short distance from the newly renovated Kenny Hills Bakers location. The Stories of Taman Tunku, serial restaurateur Au Tai Hon's latest "baby," delivers consolation in literal bowls. We saw that the Signature Aromatic Crispy Duck was highlighted on the menu, and decided to give it a try since their duck rice was amazing. When the dish arrived we were sort of surprised by how the dish looked. The duck was fried and the wrap was a yellow crepe it is definitely not your typical Duck wrap. We were surprised by how much we actually enjoyed the crispy duck! The crispiness of the duck was quite amazing and the meat was still succulent!

Anchovies On Toast at Brasserie Fritz

Christian Bauer and Eddie Chew of Troika Sky Dining are well-travelled and cosmopolitan, and they are recognised for entertaining rapt audiences with their travel stories. Unsurprisingly, their eateries have picked up on a few inside jokes. Brasserie Fritz, for example, was born when two different trains of thought collided. Our usual favourite when we’re at Brasserie Fritz is the Chicken liver & Foie Gras Terrine. But this time we decide to go out of the norm and try their Anchovies on toast. And it did not disappoint. It might be our new favourite. The sourdough was toasted to perfection and slathered with maple butter and cream cheese while the anchovies and roasted tomato sit daintily on the toast. One bite will for sure make you fall in love. The creaminess of the butter and cream cheese combo compliments so well the juicy and smoked anchovies. Definitely will come back for more.
