First of all, I have to give it to Katsudon Hanakatsu for offering such a value-for-money katsudon, despite having only 2 items on the menu which are the Ha-Na katsudon in spicy or non-spicy versions. At $13.50++, you get 3 pieces of chicken and pork each, topped on a bed of either the Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice or a mixture of that with the 16-multigrains.

I preferred the breaded chicken because they were tender and juicy (just like those in Tendon Kohaku) as compared to the pork, which was dry and hard. The sauce that was drizzled over the meat had a sweet umami flavor, and helped to mask some grease from the deep fried batter, though more sauce would be appreciated. Unlike the plain rice in Kohaku's tendon, this katsudon's rice had a layer of egg sauce added for more flavor and moist texture. Be warned of the fiery chili powder in the spicy version, it can definitely send your lips feeling numbed! And one thing not to overlook is the nori bits sprinkled on the meat pieces, for they contribute a fresh savory touch to the meatiness. You can also sprinkle the spice powder or dip the meat in the soya sauce provided for heavier flavors.
I won't be seeing myself return anytime soon, albeit the worthiness. The portion was too much, and it got monotonous towards the end. I prefer the variety in a Tendon and I miss my veggies!
