There seems to be always something new up along Tanjong Pagar Road of the late — opened for a while now, Darkness Dessert is a relatively new dessert shop serving up Chinese desserts. Located just right beside Delicatesse 巧彰, Darkness Dessert can be found along the same stretch of shophouses that is home to COTTA and Natter Coffee & Gelato (also the spot of the now-defunct Haven Coffee). Decked with a rather oriental setting, Darkness Dessert serves up a variety of Tong Shui (糖水) — the menu features few categories ranging from Almond Paste, Sesame Paste, Black Glutinous Rice and Green Bean Soup, all the way to Yam Paste, Mango Sago, Red Bean Paste, Grass Jelly and Mango/Soursop Ice; all of which that can be had as-is or with a wide variety of toppings to choose from. Beverage options include mostly canned drinks; that being said, they do offer Iced Blended Soursop and Iced Blended Mango for those whom are looking for something out of the canned drink options that they have.

Going for the Black Sesame Almond Paste, this is essentially one of the more basic options that they have on their menu here — more of a Yuan Yang-mix of Black Sesame Paste and Almond Paste served in the same bowl, we felt that the Almond Paste seems to be the star between the two. Whilst both pastes can be said as smooth with the Black Sesame Paste being more grainier in texture as we would expect and like it to be, the Black Sesame Paste feels like it lacks a roasty punch and seemed a tad bland when compared to the Almond Paste. The Almond Paste, in retrospect, carried a distinct aroma that runs lightly at the back of the throat without being particularly sweet; was pretty much the better one of the two that made the item more palatable.

Whilst we have only tried one single item out of the many available at Darkness Dessert, we felt that the Black Sesame Paste was a little of a miss for us where flavour is of concern. That being said, the Almond Paste does seem to be decent, and we are actually quite tempted by the photos of the Mango Pomelo Sago posted by another individual online. Probably another visit is needed to really see what stands out here at Darkness Dessert — but I guess it would be the Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts & Lotus Seed which we are eyeing on for our next visit here!
