We had a really satisfying and wallet-friendly lunch for 7 pax at Dong Bei Ren Jia 东北人家 recently!

We ordered:
- Sautéed Hot and Sour Shredded Potato with Green Pepper 酸辣土豆丝 ($6)
- Green Bean Noodle, Carrot and Cucumber Salad 东北大拉皮 ($8)
- Shredded Cabbage 手撕包菜 ($8)
- Fried Vermicelli with Minced Meat 肉末粉条 ($10)
- Sautéed Tomato with Egg 番茄炒鸡蛋 ($8)
- Double Stir-Fried Spicy Sliced Pork 回锅肉 ($14)
- Sweet and Sour Pork 锅包肉 ($14)

The food is great - I truly enjoyed every dish that we ordered. Special shout-out to the hot and sour shredded potato that is crunchy and refreshing, the fried vermicelli with minced meat that is super garlicky and very fragrant, and the sweet and sour pork that is different style from the tomato-based 咕噜肉 found in zichar stalls. The thick and tender pork cutlets are fried and coated in a sweet and sour sauce made from vinegar and sugar - love this!

Would love to come back again!

I boycotted Dong Bei Ren Jia after experiencing a bad attitude wait staff many months ago. Finally, I am back, and while service is still relatively subpar, I have decided to look past that and focus on the affordability, variety and flavours of the food. Hence, the next time I am back again in the future, I will come with a better managed expectation.

Really popular eatery with tables pilling out into the walkway by the road. Come early to get the air-conditioned indoor seating! We were unfortunately seated by some trash bins but one of the staff kindly shifted it away.

For the food, we ordered:
- Shredded Cabbage: great crunch and delicious
- Sauteed Hot And Sour Shredded Potato With Green Pepper: pretty average but potato strips are always good
- Preserved Egg With Tofu: done think the flavours meshed together well
- Stir fried Pork and Vermicelli with Celery: pretty addictive, would recc this
- Stir Fried Chicken With Fried Chilli: barely any fried chicken, and pieces were tiny as well. Wouldn't order this again.
- Guobaorou: Sauce on the tangier side, meat were thin strips that was tough to chew, but the batter had this interesting mochi-ness. But would skip this.

Our Korean friends love 东北人家's guobaorou because it reminds them of tangsuyuk (Korean sweet and sour pork).

There are however differences between the two. In general, goubaorou uses a chewier but softer cut of pork whereas the batter for tangsuyuk tends to be crispier. The sauce for tangsuyuk tends to be stronger in terms of flavours and more tangy.

If you only have space for one dish here, this is the must order dish which you will definitely not regret having!

Guotie or pot stickers is one of the most ubiquitous dishes in chinese cuisines and can be found in hawker stalls and Michelin star restaurants. If the guoties are bad, you are probably better off elsewhere 🤣🤣🤣

东北人家's version was good. I love that the bottom of the guoties were nicely crisp and the meat filling was juicy and nicely marinated. Their dumpling skin was also not too thick and held the juices well.

Its a good way to start the meal and needless to say, our guests enjoyed them!

东北人家 is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants as they serve non-fussy, unpretentious and homely Chinese food at affordable prices. The restaurant is always buzzing with noise and life, and is also one of the places that Miss K and I would bring our overseas friends to.

We were hosting some friends recently which afforded us an opportunity to try more of their menu. The texture of their 烧茄子 or stir-fried eggplant was meltingly tender and it absorbed the flavours of the sweet and savoury braising sauce, making it the perfect "rice thief!
