Pulut Tekan with Kaya ($4.50)

Back here specially for this dessert!
Perf combination with their homemade Kaya and Coffee

Very good kaya, very good kueh! Will totally come back for a tea time treat. The Kopi Siew Dai was excellent - very fragrant and just strong enough.

tea break because food like these. is like atasfied kopitiam tea break but you don't mind the extra bucks at all. pulut tekan ($4), a peranakan glutinous rice cake here is paired with their home made artisan kaya here - it was light, very soothing, and that mellowed sweetness that you forget you are downing glutinous rice shot one after another. sugee cake ($4.80) is another their signature - coarser almonds here lends a hearty bite to this rich cake with a lemon drizzle that complements it so well. best to down one bite with a sip of your favourite heartland kopi each time!

Posted this once, and that was the very first time I have walked into Sunset Railway Cafe. When the craving for Kueh kicks in and you need a spot near school to have a quick coffee break that has local Kopi and WiFi — Sunset Railway Cafe is just the spot I would end up hitting. Essentially like a Kueh Salat, but you get to smear the eggy blob of Kaya (which acts like a Pandan mousse that is on a Kueh Salat) atop the beautiful diamonds of Glutinous Rice speckled with blue hues of the Butterfly Pea all by yourself. Each portion of glutinous rice comes tacky with a good bite; certainly a good item to pair alongside a cup of Kopi while working on the laptop over their WiFi.

Despite the name of this dish there is really no feeling of getting "Tekan" by this dish. Pretty apt for a tea time treat, the Pulut Tekan is your Peranakan Kueh-Kueh featuring glutinous rice with Kaya; albeit of a deconstructed version where you get to slather the Kaya on your own instead. The Kueh comes a little tacky, but fresh without being sticky or mushy, while the Kaya carries a whiff of coconut flavour amongst the sweetness. Apart from this, Sunset Railway Cafe also serves mains like Nasi Lemak, Curry Chicken and Mee Siam. Would probably head here again to check the other mains out since it's so near school!
