Dim Sum Haus (Jalan Besar)

The pan-fried Purple Sweet Potato Rice Cake ($6.80) was a winner. The contracting texture with its slightly crisp edges and the soft-chewy rice cake was very enjoyable and not greasy or cloying.

And to usher in the Lunar New Year festivities, they also curated a compact menu (available till the end of January) with options of rice, noodles, and handmade dim sums. I would skip the heavy carbs and get straight to their signature dumplings and snacks. Fried to perfection, the Popping Lychee Ball ($6.80) was wonderfully crispy on the outside and surprisingly succulent on the inside. A unanimous favourite at the table, the shrimp balls were also nicely seasoned and served piping hot.

For the centerpiece, their Abalone Prosperity Yu Sheng comes in two portion sizes ($68.80/ 6-10 pax & $48.80/ 3-5 pax). Though it was your run-of-the-mill quintessential CNY starter, it came with plenty of everyone’s must-have crispy flour crackers and shredded vegetables to go around.
