Originally set up with the focus on selling fishballs (鱼蛋), it ended up gaining popularity quickly with its bowls of Suan La Fen. It is now better known as one of the best in Hong Kong which I totally understand why.
Order a bowl with your preferred level of spiciness and move on to its left for an air-conditioned standing eating area (so thankful for this in the summer heat). I got to say that I really enjoyed this, especially the perfectly cooked chewy sweet potato noodles and the amazingly crunchy sliced pickled mustard stems, which were unlike the usual forgettable over salty ones. This Suan La Fen was fragrant, slightly ‘numby’ and wasn’t too sour nor spicy, making it a comfortable bowl to slurp down. The soup had a thicker consistency and filled with finely chopped up ingredients unlike usual ones which you mostly find spammed with chilli oil. I loved how the only sounds we heard here was everyone sniffing from the spices while busily slurping their noodles up. Head on next door to the strategically located 椰汁大王 to get a cup of chendol-taste-a-like Coconut Juice if you need to calm down your taste buds!
