Bowen's Signature Pasta Got to know of this pretty hidden spot sometime back via Burpple; located just a short walk from Lakeside MRT Station, Bowen's is a coffeeshop-esque establishment that serves economic bee hoon in the day and Italian fare at night. They seem to be pretty known by the residents around the area; the stall was pretty near maximum capacity when we visited it during dinner hours with most tables occupied by 3 or more pax. As simple as it seems being just pasta and sauce, it's not everywhere that one would be able to find a pasta tossed in wild boar cream sauce. Though a little gamey, the sauce provides a savoury flavour that is laced with the pasta that provides the al-dente noodles all the flavour it needs. The pasta are pretty affordable here; this costs $8.90 and none of them are priced above $10 — the coffeeshop setting (which also means no aircon here) probably helps to keep the prices low here.

Garlic Bread ($0.50) Was expecting the usual smallish garlic bread portion as it's only $0.50! Seriously worth it! The garlic bread is toasted to crisp and the length is approximately that of a fork's.

Seafood Spaghetti ($8.90) Bowen's offers cafe quality at coffee shop prices. The spaghetti is cooked till al dente and the seafood portion is not stingy. Served with a bit of gravy, this pasta is a satisfying treat!

Chicken chop ($6.90) For its coffee shop price tag, this item is really really really worth it. Firstly, the portion is bigger than the usual coffee shop western food portion. The chicken chop is cooked to perfection, smells really yummy when it was served. Fries are crispy and the salad comes with red wine sauce with hint of vinegar. This is really good value. More like cafe quality at coffee shop price. This coffee shop (blk 517, directly opposite Rulang primary school) used to be really quiet until Bowen's started. Ever since then it enjoys brisk business every night. The small coffee shop is packed with patrons who live around the area. Worth a visit if you stay in the West. Only open in the evening, do take note it closes on Sunday nights.

For Excellent Hong Kong Style Roast Meats This cha chaan teng along Victoria Street is helmed by an esteemed chef who was previously the number one barbecue cook at The Excelsior Hotel and Convention Centre in Hong Kong, so you can expect the roast meat to be excellent. If there's only one thing to get on the menu, let it be the Pork Belly Char Siew ($16), a personal favourite of our Burpple Tastemaker Russell Leong. He describes it as "thick slices of wobbly, fatty porcine perfection with a fat to meat ratio of nearly 1:1, charcoal roasted to gluttonous glory before taking a dip in a sweet, honey-infused sauce". Thankfully, it's not as oily as you'd expect it to be, and the luscious, melt-in-your-mouth fatty bits together with the tender meat is best shared amongst two people. Otherwise, come with a group of friends and have the Four Heavenly Kings Platter ($48) to share — it comes with crispy roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, barbecued pork and crispy roasted pork. Avg Price: $10 per person Photo by Burpple Tastemaker Russell Leong

Brisk Business Cantonese style beef brisket noodles are a little uncommon in Singapore, due to the Hainanese style beef noodles being far more prevalent. So when I saw this plate of beefy beauty that comes highly recommended by Jayne on the menu, I knew I had to order it. And boy I can see why she loves it. Big chunks of mindblowingly magnificent beef that fall apart when prodded with chopsticks are loaded to the brim with amazing, savory flavors. Each bite is an explosion of flavors on your palette, and the sheer softness of the meat ensures that you are almost inhaling the beef instead of chewing it. As for the noodles, they were free of the repulsive alkaline taste that seems to plague many noodle places in recent days, and they were tossed in a pleasantly palatable sauce. For just $8.80, you too, can hop aboard the one way trip to this fabulous flavor fiesta. #burpplebestbugis

烧味双拼 / Twin Combo ($17.50) Choose between Roasted Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken & Roasted Pork to make your own combo of roasted meats! The Roasted Pork was a juicy combination of perfectly crisp crackling with soft & equal layers of fat & meat. As for the soy sauce chicken, the tenderness of the chicken was just right, easily making it one of the favorites for the evening.

Yummy! But prefer western style duck confits 😂 Lucky Plaza outlet: Famous crispy duck from @bebekgorengpakndut_sg! The Asian duck confit 😂 It's normal-nice, won't purposely travel there, or have cravings for it. Rating: 7/10 Will i return/recommend: Yes/Yes Pros: Not a fan of peanut sauce but lovin' the gado-gado (veg) ❤ Oxtail meat was very tender. Crispy duck is yums, especially the skin, so sinful yet good. Cons: Don't feel too authentic. The duck was nice, but it's not same as the ones i had in Indo & tad bit dry. It's like a simplified version. Oxtail soup was thin (prefer stew versions), & too much "stuffs" inside. Beware the chilli, it's super spicy. Prefer to takeaway/ubereats, place not comfy. Price: S$37.40 - 2pax, finished nearly everything

FAT SQUID ALERT!! Saw recommendations online to try this so we did and it was yummy, sans the fact that we actually doggie bagged this and had it almost 30mins later, resulting in it being less crispy than it was. Nevertheless, the squid was fat and chewy but a tad pricey I feel.

Drunk On Happiness This Drunkard Noodle Pork is one of the more unique Thai food I've had! Kway teow soaked in what seems like basil pork sauce, this simple dish is kickass spicy, tasty but can come across as a little too salty (for me). But have no fear, Thai milk tea is here! Extinguish the flames with the ice cold Cha Yen. A major plus point is that it is not too sweet!

Drunkard Noodle Pork ($7.90) from Kra Pow - every now and then when I think about having Thai food, my mind automatically flash to a plate of these flat kway tiao stir fried with basil pork. Looks ordinary, but it taste a-may-zinggggg. Super super fragrant (especially when they state no msg is added) though just abit on the oilier side, but that also made it much more tastier. Already can't wait for the next chance to order the whole plate for myself.

Squid Tentacle Fritters These were pretty fantastic — honestly quite stoked how similar these tasted to Old Chang Kee's Fried Octopus OnStick in flavour but delightfully thin and crisp batter which makes them even more addictive to have. The chili lime aioli gave just a manageable and light kick in terms of spiciness, but also a tinge of sweetness that made these already delicious morsels of squid tentacles even more appetising!

Best Value!!! Pictured here is a meal for 3 that came up to only $18. We had ordered too much for our own good, but we kept stuffing ourselves anyway. I personally thought the best dishes here were the spicy chili wanton ($4.50 for 10 pieces) and the pan fried dumplings ($6 for 10 pieces). As the dumplings and wanton are all handmade, the skin is just thick enough to seal in the freshness, but not so thin that the dumpling will fall apart when you pick it up. Also, I dare say the spicy chili wanton is as good as that of a famous Chinese restaurant chain.... The queue is never ending, so go early to avoid long waiting times.

While they're really famous for their xiao long baos, the chili wantons here at Zhong Guo La Mian Xiao Long Bao are actually really good as well. • A thin skin encases each ball of delicious pork and shrimp filling and they are covered in a sauce made from a perfect combo of vinegar and spices. • Each order costs $4.50 and they give 10 pieces of wantons. If that's not a good deal, idk what is.

红油抄手 $6 Ordered a few items to try and this was the dish that really stood out. The chilli packs a punch, yet not overpowering and is in sync with the vinegar that coats the dumplings. The chilli is not only spicy, but flavourful, adding otherwise a dimension most 红油抄手s are lacking. The dumpling skin is silky and smooth, and absorbs a good amount of the chilli vinegar sauce.

Seafood Hor Fun Priced at $7, this Seafood Hor Fun will fill your tummy with goodness throughout your meal. The Hor Fun is simply amazing with the 'Wok' taste in every bite you take. Although the gravy seems like it has a lot of minced garlic in it, but there's hardly any taste of it. The seafood that they use are all very fresh and pairs well with the whole dish. Portion wise is about 3/4 of Herry-Stomach 😜

Prawn Paste Chicken Wing As unhealthy as the words "chicken wing" may sound, you should really come down here to have a taste! Costing you $13.90, it gets you 9 pieces of chicken wings with their special chili by the side. The chicken wing was still very tender and crispy even after it's been left untouched for a long time. Most chicken wings will turn soggy or tough if you don't eat it quickly, but it's not the case for this. The chili pairs really well with the chicken wing, although it's slightly spicy. Just a side note, the plating was creative as it was on a boat-like plate. 😂

Huge Yam Ring Xin Yuan Ji is well known for their sliced fish soups, however their Yam ring is one of the best I've ordered amongst other Tze Char stalls. It's a must try if you love yam! Comes sprinkled with various veggies and cashew nuts. Good to share with 4 others as the serving is huge :-)

Who would have thought that salted egg & cereal would go so well together? I must say the combination of these two is a smart move! Imagine a thick gravy-like consistency for the salted egg sauce with a spicy kick from the chilli padi & crispy bits of cereal to add some texture & crunch to the sauce. They have officially upped the game for salted egg fries! #Burpproved #frydaywithfries #frydaywithamd #吃western

$6 for this chicken chop at 吃Western! Although i feel like it is quite reasonable for this price, but i wish they added more sides like fries. Anyways the chicken was grilled perfectly with the charred surface and the tender meat beneath. This was served with mashed potatoes and purple coleslaw.

Steak Frites The steak was pretty good, nice charred taste and tender enough such that you can use a butter knife to cut. Good brown/black pepper sauce as well. Steak is quite thin so don't expect your preferred doneness. Reasonable price of $14. Absolutely recommend changing the fries to the creamy and smooth mash potato, then get a salted egg cereal fries ($4.50) to share!

Categorised as "Local", cause this is the true-blue Western fare we grew up with here in SG I've long gave up on the prospect of having cheap and good Western fare like those we grew up chomping on, since we've got better (albeit more expensive) options now where most hawker Western stalls of late are all pretty much ubiquitous and a letdown. So: biggest surprise and joy of the week was to find this epic amazing hawker Western stall. Huge huge huuuuuge chicken chop — the skin-on kind I loved back when this was every kid's fave — boasting a great char, tangy and sweet purple slaw, and soooo much smooth, creamy mash. All of this for (guess what) just 6 bucks. Don't expect luscious Robuchon buttery mash or some badass pan gravy: this is the hawker-style Western fare we grew up with, and I dare say it's no lesser than their more renowned counterparts.

Chef's Special Beef Slices Soup With Rice ($5) Want a good bowl of beef slices soup but yet didn't want to break the bank? This is the place for you as we have found out during our lunch at Bugis yesterday. The broth was very light and not too beefy while the special marinated beef slices was uber tender. Overall, a very comforting lunch that wraps you like a blanket during rainy days.

Beef Noodle Dry ($5) The sauce for this dry noodle option weren't as thick and zhup-ish as I'd like them to be. But I was surprised at how the light and slippery texture of the noodles had me really going non stop, till the end of the meal. And these sour pickles!! Ah I love them!!

$5 of Hainanese Beef Noodles Goodness. "Blanco Court" brings back fond memories, as I used to study near there and would buy cheap things from the while sale market. Not sure the relation of this shop to Blanco Court, but I liked its smooth savoury sauce and generous ingredients. Opp Bugis Junction.

Excellent Chili Porridge not available so I ordered sliced beef noodles dry and soup version, and fried chicken wings. I chose yellow noodles. The soup tasted robust and meaty. A bit salty but still good. I really like the dry version. The sauce was flavorful and covered the lye taste of yellow noodles very well. I was astounded by the amount of beef in the bowls. A good number of huge thick slices that were so tender. A few pcs were a bit tough to chew but considering the generous portions, I was willing to overlook it. Chicken wings were very juicy and well seasoned. I enjoyed them. I love love love the chili sauce. Very very spicy and aromatic. This was like the main for me. The noodles and chicken wings were just the sides! 🎃 Total bill $15.
