Throwback to my favourite meal in London 2 months ago, where Chiltern Firehouse quite blew me away with this immaculately cooked duck breast accompanied by Jerusalem artichoke and pear three ways – raw, pickled, and grilled.

Varying degrees of crunch, sweetness and sourness from the fine slices of pear, plus the juicy meatiness and crisped skin of the duck, plus the tenderness of the charred artichoke... MAGIC.

Perhaps my expectations were low because online reviews described Chiltern Firehouse as overhyped, but I really did have a fabulous experience here. Our orders were churned out from the kitchen well-paced like a well-oiled machine, served to us by affable waitstaff, most notably the very personable Bryan (Brian?), an attentive French chap who took great care of us and had us in peals of laughter throughout the meal.

The food, of course, was on point, starting with this "Snack" of Bacon Cornbread served with the most indulgent butter sprinkled with cheese powder – think Cheezels seasoning. The flavour of the bacon was quite mild, but the overall savouriness of these moist and dense yet fluffy, corn muffin-like breadsticks was decidedly winsome.
