Thankfully I have some of @ron.chef’s stored in deep freeze which I steamed for a quick dinner last night. Super yummy!

The real Ipoh curry laksa and yes, you can try it here in Maxwell. It's the best thing outside of Ipoh. Unless you are making a flight up north, I would advise you to make your way here pretty soon as they are only available till the end of this month. Sadly, @ron.chef has decided to hang up his apron. So hurry before it's too late! So nice to have met Chef @willcookwilleat and @sqtop this morning and thanks for letting me crash your party and thanks for lunch!

This soupy style is the original Ipoh Curry Mee but you don't have to travel 562 kilometres for it. There is a much more accessible spot right here in Singapore at @ron.chef (stall 3 inside Maxwell Road Hawker Centre). A family-run business, they focus on a small selection of Ipoh specialties, including the dish above.
I loved everything about their Ipoh Curry Mee. The very fragrant gravy wasn't the thick-with-coconut-milk sort you associate with most Chinese-style curries. Instead, it's nicely balanced with a chicken broth - making it ideal for rather guilt-free slurping. The fresh mint leaves lifts the flavour profile and the bean sprouts add a welcome crunch to the mixed noodles. What's more, a bowl costs only $4.

If my two Ipoh-born foodie friends @blueskiescottonclouds and @happygreedyfoodie whom I trust, can vouch for the authenticity of Chef Ron's "Ipoh Curry Noodles", I am sold!
Pictured here is the dry version which tasted exactly like the curry mee my late grandma used to cook, and that I loved so much. If I were to draw a comparison, I'd say it is very similar to Indian-style fish head curry which is deeply aromatic and spicy. What gave it extra pizzazz was the dash of special dark soya sauce that came all the way from Ipoh, and fresh mint leaves grown by the hawkers themselves.
This family-owned and run hawker stall also deserves a big thumbs-up for choosing to use only fresh, not frozen, chicken and pork. The latter is made into the "char siew" and "sio bak" that go on as toppings. "Chef Ron" is open Mondays to Saturdays with dishes ready in stages from about 9am. Besides Ipoh Curry Mee, they also sell Malaysia-style Nasi Lemak, Curry Chicken with Rice, "Bak Zhang" and more.
They are at stall no. 3 which is located along the same row as "Tian Tian Chicken Rice" but towards the end closer to South Bridge Road.

Just make your way to @ron.chef The Nasi Lemak here really tastes of home. I brought a good friend and he was so happy eating it. He said it tasted like the ones he had as a kid. Malaysia, I wish you a blessed Independence Day. May your sons and daughters hold true to the spirit of independence and truly understand what it means. Merdeka!
