bought 6 muffins as there was a buy 5 get 1 free promotion. pictured are: blueberry, apple, banana walnut, double chocolate, hokkaido cream & lava cheese. i didn’t try all as i was sharing with other people, but these are my reviews on what i tried:

- hokkaido cream: this was so sweet and decadent, the fluffiness of the muffin paired well with the oozing cream, and the cream had the fragrance of hokkaido milk. 8.5/10

- lava cheese: had high hopes for this but i guess it didn’t live up to expectations as much. the cheese didn’t ooze out as expected from the name ‘lava’ so it was a little hard, though i still did enjoy the taste because i’m a cheese lover. 7/10

- double chocolate: can’t go wrong with a double chocolate muffin. this was filled with chocolate chips as well so that gave a different dimension to the overall texture and was so rich. could get a bit jelak at the end though! 8/10

A humble stall in Lau Pa Sat, Butter & Cream offers a range of muffins that do make a good snack or breakfast item!

The Hokkaido Cream Muffin ($2.90) was one of the better muffins, as not only it was moist and not too sweet, it was packed full of custard filling which had a rich milk and egg taste! Might be sinful, but really decent.

The Chocolate Muffin ($2.60) was also moist and rich and not too sweet. If this was a lava muffin, I can imagine how much better it would be!

The Blueberry Muffin ($2.60) was alright, wish there were more blueberry fillings within!

Overall, the muffins were pretty decent but not really spectacular. Still snackable though!

Hadn’t really hit Lau Pa Sat for quite a while since these days our preference does seem to be more towards heading to Maxwell for lunch whenever we return to the office — was pretty surprised when we found out Butter & Cream had not only expanded its operations by opening a new outlet at Kopitiam Square in Sengkang, but they have also since also taken up another unit at Lau Pa Sat beside the original stall that they have been occupying all these while. With the expansion of their shop space at Lau Pa Sat, Butter & Cream has also widened their selection of items available — originally only serving up a considerably well-sized variety of muffins, tarts and basque burnt cheesecakes in different flavours, their current selection also includes a new line-up of Doffins (i.e. a hybrid between a donut and a muffin), as well as a Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream that is served in the form of a soft-serve ice-cream.

We had previously made a purposeful visit to Butter & Cream when they had first opened their original shop unit to give their tarts and basque burnt cheesecake a go; still recalled that we were actually pretty impressed having tried both items considering how they are an establishment situated within a hawker centre. Knowing that they had released a Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream, we found ourselves being intrigued to make yet another purposeful visit to their stall again. Served in a waffle cone by default, it is noted that there are no options for the soft-serve to be served in a cup at Butter & Cream. That being said, we were really impressed with how Butter & Cream’s rendition of the Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream turned out to be — it was what exactly we wanted it to be; smooth, rich and creamy without being particularly heavy, the Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream was incredibly easy to have. For one, the notes of Hokkaido Milk was really distinct in this one; it bears that whiff of milky fragrance that made it so good — pretty much on par with the one from Tokachi Premium from Ryugetsu at Takashimaya Food Hall which we once loved (though standards have slipped pretty recently, and that they only serve the soft-serve in plastic cups these days) — definitely a highlight for us. The waffle cone does carry a good crunch, though we did feel that the waffle cone carried a hint of sweetness that just added on to the Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream albeit unnecessarily; probably would be better if the waffle cone could emphasise a little more on the fragrance of buttermilk instead.

Being first established in late 2021, it is interesting to see how Butter & Cream has grown over the short span of time — operating a F&B business in the midst of a pandemic is not easy feat, and we are glad to see how the folks at Butter & Cream has not only managed to sustain business all these while, but also expanded both the variety of items that they serve as well as their operations into two locations. Having the chance to snack on their various offerings on an on-and-off basis whenever someone decides to grab some muffins and tarts for events or just for a casual treat, we are really impressed with how they have managed to stay pretty consistent in terms of execution and overall quality thus far — it is little wonder why they seem to have garnered a strong following with the crowd endlessly forming up to do takeaways of their various offerings, and gained popularity with the office workers around the Central Business District. Whilst we have yet to give their Doffins a try, we would say that the Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream from Butter & Cream surpassed our initial expectations yet again; something which Butter & Cream seem to have always does for us. With that, we would also like to take the opportunity to congratulate the folks behind Butter & Cream on the opening of their second outlet at Kopitiam Square at Sengkang, as well as on their expanded space at Lau Pa Sat — we are definitely looking forward to return for more!

The trend for Basque Burnt Cheesecakes and Cheese Tarts had came and went, but was pretty surprised to be able to find a stall that only serves the two afore-mentioned items and more at Lau Pa Sat. Butter & Cream Bakery is a pretty new addition to the hawker centre, which has seen quite a number of new stalls serving pretty hipster cuisine having moved in to its premises ever since office workers have started to gradually return to their workplaces. What truly was a pretty sight is how they have lined their display counter with a wide variety of muffins — something which we found rather enticing despite the various types of egg tarts (they do have a Chocolate Egg Tart and a Salted Egg Lava Tart) and basque burnt cheesecakes that they have to offer. The items are pretty reasonably priced as well; the highest-priced being the Basque Burnt Cheesecake at $6.80.

Couldn’t resist to temptation so found ourselves ordering two bakes whilst waiting for the bus to head home for dinner — both of the bakes were pretty impressive but our pick between the two would be the Basque Burnt Cheesecake over the Original Egg Tart. Despite being a “hawker centre” Basque Burnt Cheesecake, the rendition served here at Butter & Cream Bakery puts some of the renditions served at cafes to shame — the Basque Burnt Cheesecake is light and creamy; not particularly jelak and easy to eat. Sinking the fork into the Basque Burnt Cheesecake, slicing the cheesecake was almost effortless — the cream cheese layer is decadent without being particularly overwhelmingly cheesy nor dense; all that with burnt top layer that carries a slight earthiness that gives a contrast to the savouriness. In retrospect, some may notice the thicker-than-usual crust for the egg tart; perhaps intentionally done so as the cookie-esque crust was not as dense as one would expect — crumbly, and does hold up the egg curd well despite being a tad soft. The egg curd was however smooth and jiggly; not too sweet and does work well as an entire package.

Western bakes and pastries are often a tough find hawker centres, so an establishment like Butter & Cream Bakery does come as a pleasant surprise — it being at Lau Pa Sat can be said as a safe move, considering how Lau Pa Sat had been pretty gentrified over the years with the opening of more hipster stalls targeting the office folk. What really truly impressed us is not its existence, but how they do serve up some very well-executed bakes that exceed those that some specialty cafes serve up — all at a rather reasonable price point. An option worth considering for post-meal dessert for office workers in the area, and also a spot for an easy grab-and-go for last minute office celebrations/treats if cakes and pastries are needed.

Papa found this amazing muffin place that does muffs the way I love it, like how AJ’s muffins are baked! Price wise, they’re on rather similar price points. At $2.40/60 per muffin, it’s not exactly the cheapest muffin but they’re still at half the price of overpriced, bland tasting muffins served at cafes 😂 I particularly love the raspberry and blueberry muffins! Somehow, the chocolate-y version didn’t win me over. The vanilla-y fragrance was very much pronounced in the non-chocolate selections. The chocolate-y taste in the choc-base muffins (Oreo, s’mores, double chocolate) were a tad too bland for me. They’re best eaten after reheating and cooled! The streusel bits on the muffin tops are crispy and the muffin top literaly ‘cracks’ apart when the fork pierced through it 😅
