The breakfast Beast - $16
·
Yummy scrambled eggs and flavourful pork sausages sandwiched in between toasted Cubano bun, with melted cheddar for extra savoury. Comes with two pieces of hash browns to tickle your tastebuds. Portion wise is just nice, not too full, perfect with my piccolo

Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar
@beastly.girls

Came across the social media pages of the new Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar — Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar adds on to the number of cafes that are currently operating along East Coast Road considering how it is being located at the ground floor of The Odeon, being situated right beside the now-defunct ObiObi — Taste of Hokkaido. Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar is also just a few units away from other F&B establishments such as the outlet of The Whole Kitchen and Wan Mei Dessert; both within the same building. Interestingly, The Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar’s shop unit has a dual frontage; currently in its soft launch stage, only the side facing Ean Kiam Place is in operation — the seating space for dine-in patrons being the bar counter seats as well as the dining tables that are lined along the walkway of the building. The kitchen, counter and food preparation area takes up most of the space within the shop unit, though there seems to be potential dine-in counter seating at the side within The Odeon, though these were not in use during our visit there. Offering a food menu that is split into several sections, it is worth noting that the Breakfast section is only served from 9am to 11:30am, while the Lunch menu is offered from 11:30am to closing — patrons can also go for sides to share across the table, or sweets to end off their meal with. A variety of cakes and pastries are also on display at the counter; this includes items like croissants, Kouign Amann and a Lemon Pistachio Slice. Beverages served up at Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar includes the usual list of espresso-based specialty coffee, tea, juices and craft beer — just to name a few.

The Beastly Girl is an open-faced toast that features elements such as flame-torched tender beef tongue, fried egg, melted Emmental, Mayo and Dijon Mustard on sourdough toast. The toast is also served with potato crisps on the side. On first look, the flame-torched beef tongue look rather dry; we were glad that it turned out to be really tender and soft — fibrous yet with a melt-in-the-mouth texture, all considering how we have been told that they had actually poached the beef tongue as part of its preparation process before it is being flame-torched and served together with the toast. Essentially a rather simple toast offering, The Beastly Girl does not offer much surprises here, but is more of an item that is hearty and comforting. It seems that the gamey notes of the beef tongue is intended for the dish to carry that “meatiness”; the Dijon Mustard spread on the toast cutting through most of those gamey notes so all does not get too overbearing. The melted Emmental was provided a stretchy texture and mild, savoury note that brings the beef tongue and the sourdough toast together; all that whilst the sunny side-up comes with a molten egg yolk which is a crowd-pleaser of its own — creates a silky texture that also attempts to bind everything together. Meanwhile, the sourdough toast came all crusty on the exterior and also comes with a slight tension for that chew as one attempts to slice it apart; also had a slight tang from the fermentation process in the making of sourdough bread. The accompanying crisps are nothing much to shout about; seemingly just some salted chips that came out of the bag.

Having only tried The Beastly Girl during our visit to Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar, we felt that Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar’s offerings does seem to lie on the safer side — or at least, The Beastly Girl does seem to be an item that gave us that impression. It does not attempt to reinvent the wheel, but at the same time, there is just something that makes it feel simple and comforting — almost like having gone to a friend’s place and that the friend is whipping up something that speaks to the soul for everyone who comes to visit. Service by the folks at Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar was also on point; the folks were all about making their guests feel at home and at ease — engaging into small talk whilst giving an introduction of the menu and its various items, whilst also being apologetic about some items that had went out of stock. They were also actively gathering feedback on the patron’s experience as well; very friendly folks that are great hosts as well. There is definitely saturation of cafes in Katong, and especially so at the immediate area where Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar is located at — that being said, perhaps there is still space for Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar amidst all that just for that slightly different vibe that they are able to offer.
