Located at the heart Tanjong Pagar, Bara Food offers authentic Indonesian grilled rice in the CBD.

There is a variety of grilled rice sets to choose from. Ayam Goreng Serundeng ($14.50) features Javanese style fried chicken topped with a fried spice and herbs, while Bumbu Kemanji ($14.50) comes with stir-fried shredded chicken with lemon basil leaves. The chicken is tender, moist and flavourful. This is absolutely delicious.

Each set also comes with grilled rice, crispy Melinjo crackers, fried tofu and tempeh, and chilli. The biggest surprise has to be the rice that is wrapped in banana leaves and grilled - it is so savoury and fragrant, which reminds me of chicken rice. Even something simple like the fried tofu and tempeh are done very well (aromatic and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside) and everything go really well with the fiery chilli. Love it!

This place is a bitch to find, it's in icon extension which is off the main road, take note it's not the icon village building.

But the food is legit. Skin has the dry kind of crisp, the kicap Manis is solid. Belachan was flavourful and not overly spicy, marinated shallots had their own character.

The rice though, it's seriously impressive. Damn fragrant from the leaves, almost an in your face kind of intensity, plus it's got a little saltiness and has umami probably from broth. Good enough to eat on it's own

If not for the location, it's a must try

The rice was lightly flavoured with a herb taste. Sadly, the grilled chicken was not thigh meat so the meat abit dry. It comes with tempeh and fried tofu as well. The crackers also quite crispy. Very filling meal.

I ordered their Set C - Ayam Bakar Betutu
Balinese style grilled chicken, served with a unique earthy ‘Sambal Matah’, a mixture of different raw spices in special chili Oil.
The chicken was juicy and tasty, the rice was fragrant, prefer the chilli more spicy.
Beside that we also tried the perkedel n bakwan goreng, it’s also good. Can skip the gado gado.

Thank you guys for the bday treat.

This is my first visit to Bara, an authentic Indonesian grilled rice eatery located at Icon Village, and boy did I had a hearty meal!

I ordered Ayam Bakar Betutu (Set C - $12.50), which comes with their signature Nasi Bakar (grilled rice), Balinese style grilled chicken with Sambal Matah (a mixture of raw spices in chilli oil), fried tofu and tempe, Melinjo crackers, salad and house-made chilli. The spice-infused rice is wrapped in banana leaf and grilled, which brings out the aroma of the rice perfectly. The chicken thigh is glazed in a sweet and savoury sauce and grilled till tender, and the Sambal Matah adds a nice layer of fragrance to the chicken. The house-made chilli (Sambal Tomat and Sambal Goreng) is really spicy and it gives the chicken, tofu, tempe and Melinjo crackers a fiery kick - shiok🔥!

Overall, I am pretty impressed with the grilled rice set as each component is well-executed, the flavours are on point and the portion is generous. Glad to chance upon this delicious and authentic Indonesian eatery that is wallet-friendly:)!

I got to know this place recently after Singapore Food Master 2020 announced their top food heroes, and Bara is one of the top 3 in the west area.

A authentic Indonesian food at Icon Village extension, not much seats here but they offered a few choices of set menu for you to choose.

All set menu comes with their special grilled rice, fried tempe & tofu, sambal, melinjo crackers and side salad.

I ordered the ayam bakar betutu with it Balinese style grilled chicken, served with a unique earthy “sambal matah”, a mixture of different raw spices in special chili oil.

At first I was having hard time trying to unfold the rice wrap as your hand will get oily after. The grilled chicken has the smoked taste but totally delicious, mixed well with the chili. For $12.50, I could say this is definitely worth trying if you are looking for some Indonesian food in Singapore.
